2/ Just months later, the Adani Group submitted a $1.85 billion proposal to upgrade Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta Intl. Airport (JKIA), seeking a 30-year lease and an equity stake. But the conditions raised concerns: a $40M concession fee, tax breaks, and restrictions on new airports in Nairobi.
3/ Public backlash erupted as workers at JKIA went on strike in September 2024, protesting potential job losses and the deal's secrecy. Civil-society groups quickly took action, filing lawsuits challenging the government's negotiations with Adani.

1/ More than a decade ago, India's "Coalgate" scandal shook the nation, revealing the unfair allocation of coal blocks to private companies by the UPA government. The CAG estimated a notional loss of Rs. 1.86 lakh crore to the exchequer.
2/ This scandal led to the downfall of the Manmohan Singh government and paved the way for Narendra Modi's rise in 2014. At the same time, another coal scam was brewing, this time targeting the public.
3/ The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) unearthed over-invoicing of coal imports, meaning companies were overstating the value of coal imports, leading to inflated electricity bills for consumers.

1/ @AdaniOnline recently transferred a power contract from the struggling Pench coal-power project to their operational and growing Mahan plant. This proved beneficial for Adani, as the higher tariff rate for Pench was retained for Mahan, despite Mahan's lower production costs. Image
2/ Pench faced years of community opposition and delays. Adani has now orchestrated a transfer of the Power Supply Agreement (PSA) to Mahan.
