A legendary American singer song writer has passed.
“There’s no better songwriter alive than Kris Kristofferson,” Willie Nelson said at a 2009 BMI award ceremony for Kristofferson. “Everything he writes is a standard and we’re all just going to have to live with that.”
Mr. Kristofferson was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2004. By that time he had already been elected to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame (in 1977) and the National Academy of Popular Music’s Songwriters Hall of Fame (in 1985). He also received a lifetime achievement honor at the 2014 Grammy Awards.
He was a Golden Gloves boxer and football player in college, received a master’s degree in English from Merton College at the University of Oxford in England and turned down an appointment to teach at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, to pursue songwriting in Nashville.
He also appeared in over 50 movies.
Kris was a Christian who credited a profound moment while attending a church service in the 70's as a turning point in his life. He was a frequent guest of Johnny and June Cash at their home, not only learning the craft of songwriting but also discussing their spiritual walk and its challenges.
Julie and I were present at a concert Sunday night when Billy Joel spontaneously broke into a heartfelt rendition of the song " Me and Bobby McGee" as a tribute to this legendary writer.
