1/ On Oct 1, BC Conservative candidate David Splett (North Van-Lonsdale) asked supporters to gather at Keith & Brooksbank later that day to meet John Rustad. I was curious about the location, so I stopped by & posted what I heard. Then the BC Conservatives started to lie. #bcpoli
2/ Rustad's event was across the street from the E Keith supportive housing project approved by the District of North Vancouver in February. I previously heard a Conservative supporter brag that they would get it shut down & knew Sam Chandola (North Van-Seymour) wanted it gone.
3/ I didn't feel like I was walking into a campaign event. I felt like I was walking into another far-right rally (and I've been to an unhealthy number of far-right rallies).
"Are you with us?"
I asked who "us" is.
"The Conservative Party. I know you. Why are you here?"
4/ I stayed—they couldn't exactly prevent me from using a sidewalk, though they certainly weren't happy. John Rustad started walking north up Brooksbank, filming with a media crew. Attendees were corralled near the crosswalk & I didn't hear what was said on the walk up.
5/ I wasn't allowed to get close to Rustand. I was forced into the bike lane and had people from the Conservatives watch me. The audio and video aren't great, but this is what happened. David Splett & BC Conservative volunteers later claimed that this event was about traffic.
6/ And here is a transcript of Rustad's statements, which lasted about a minute and twenty seconds. After Rustad's presentation, people started moving around and the audio worsened.
7/ Apparently this event was entirely about traffic and Rustad didn't comment on 1200 E Keith.
8/ Chris Pistilli is the husband of Danielle Kinchella-Pistilli: the local chapter lead of hate group Action4Canada, an organizer in what became the Freedom Convoy movement, and BC Conservatives candidate David Splett’s campaign coordinator.
9/ Attending the Oct 1 rally was Melvin Bruchet, a former doctor who called COVID a hoax & supported claims that COVID vaccines caused stillbirths at Lions Gate Hospital. He participated in antivax rallies around LGH & in the larger Freedom movement.
10/ On Oct 5, Rustad did take aim at supportive housing, stating that supportive housing in BC will be abstinence-only & located away from neighbourhoods. This was part of a larger announcement in Kelowna banning encampments & warehousing unhoused folks into "secure facilities."
11/ While this played out, District of North Vancouver Councillor Lisa Muri shared a tweet that claims David Eby thinks ALL supportive housing is a failure. The clip of Eby & interpretation of Eby's statement is currently being promoted in far-right spaces.
12/ The Twitter account shared in Muri's Facebook post is yet another wannabe far-right influencer supporting John Rustad while he peddles racism, xenophobia, transphobia, health disinformation, chemtrails & a large assortment of conspiracy theories.
13/ The BC Cons don't view unhoused folks & people who use drugs as human beings. They are threats, criminals. They ruin neighbourhoods & should be locked up away from the rest of society. Radicalization has replaced all of the evidence & successes of Housing First homes.
14/ I am not naïve enough to say that supportive housing is perfect & solves absolutely everything. But there is very little for folks in North Van & it must start somewhere. Rustad undermined a municipal project that will help 65 people for a photo op. That's just ghoulish.

According to Rebel, Tamara Lich will be at Universal Ostrich Farms this weekend.
This is a Freedom Convoy cause & has been since Jan 2025 when the farm courted BC Rising.
I've been to enough Freedom Convoy events to say without reservation that these events are boring as hell.
These kinds of events are a way to generate content. That's it. Influencers can reliably livestream all day & talk to people who already agree w/ their politics so there's no risk of encountering real opposition. Then the influencer can say that everyone agrees with them.
While influencers & wannabes party it up, they tell their online audience to take a stand, to talk themselves into action (including violence). Influencers sell desperation & it's an easy transaction for a far-right audience that already believes itself to be a political victim.
1/ Neo-Nazis are holding an event in Vancouver on July 26. The location is undisclosed & could include the Vancouver area. If your venue booked Exiles of the Golden Age, you have booked a neo-Nazi gathering.
2/ This year's Exiles of the Golden Age event features Mike Maxwell of Imperium Press, Marcus Follin (who creates content as The Golden One) & Paul Waggener of Wolves of Vinland & Operation Werewolf. All are prominent in far-right spaces so let's get into it.

3/ All align with neo-Folkish movements, which combine misrepresentations of European pre-Christian religions (often Norse, Celtic or Germanic paganism) with white supremacy, ethnonationalism & a romanticized warrior aesthetic. gnet-research.org/2023/03/22/gra…
1/ It's ostrich time & this is what I'm going to cover:
➡️Framing this in the far-right context is important
➡️The poisoning of public responses to public risks is one of the greatest threats from the far-right
➡️Radicalization thrives when claims are repeated w/out examination
2/ Earlier this week, a federal court upheld an order to cull almost 400 ostriches at Universal Ostrich in Edgewood. The farm lost 69 ostriches to H5N1 avian influenza between the end of December & early January. cbc.ca/news/canada/br…
3/ Let's put this in context. Over the summer of 2022, Freedom Convoy groups jumped to farming conspiracies & related WEF, climate, food security & 15-minute city conspiracies following far-right protests in the Netherlands. cbc.ca/news/canada/fr…
1/ The BC Freedom Convoy movement is making their way to an ostrich farm in Edgewood impacted by H5N1 avian flu. This is the most significant nexus of far-right organizing in BC right now and it’s time to talk about it.
2/ So, the basic facts: Universal Ostrich Farm was infected with H5N1 avian flu in December 2024. 69 of their birds died. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) ordered the entire herd to be culled by Feb 1, 2025. ctvnews.ca/vancouver/vide…
3/ On Jan 18, Katie Pasitney, daughter of Universal Ostrich co-owner Karen Espersen, spoke with far-right influencer Odessa Orlewicz on Liberty Talk Canada. Espersen said that only “a couple” or “some” died & deaths were reported to authorities by a neighbour.
1/ On March 8, 2023, John Rustad spoke to a group of people in Abbotsford, many from local far-right movements. Rustad joined the BC Cons on February 16. Kari Simpson, a notorious anti-2SLGBTQ+ Christofascist, was there to hype up the fledgling party. #bcpoli #BCElxn2024
3/ Rustad shared the positions & conspiracies that have already come up this election, but I want to highlight this section. Rustad promised to bring in heavy-handed policing against people using drugs outside, like they do "in Europe."
1/ On Feb 3, 2024, a small podcaster in the Peace posted an interview with John Rustad that included a section on climate change. Here, Rustad claims hydrocarbons reduce climate deaths because people can use gas-powered cars to drive away from hurricanes. So I looked at his data.
2/ The idea that declining deaths due to climate events disprove the concept of climate change as a threat seems to start with a right-wing libertarian think tank called Reason, which takes a profoundly denialist approach to climate change.
Oh, and the article came out in 2011.
3/ I read the full report & saw a very interesting citation. The Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons is a far-right publication that claims, among others, climate change is beneficial, abortions cause breast cancer, vaccines cause autism & indoor smoking bans are bad.
