#OTD 2001: U.S. Special Operations Forces conduct the longest air assault raid in history targeting Taliban Supreme Leader Mullah Muhammad Omar at his residence (Objective Gecko) outside Kandahar Afghanistan a little more than a month after 9/11.
It included an airborne assault by 3/75th Ranger Regiment on a remote airstrip (Objective Rhino) which served as a forward area refueling point and beachhead into Afghanistan.

Rangers PFC Kristofor T. Stonesifer, of Missoula, Montana, and SPC. Jonn J. Edmunds, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, were killed when their Black Hawk crashed in Pakistan during the operation. May their courage and sacrifice never be forgotten. #RIP
