This sounds like people now expect Kamal to solve all of their infra problems and then some.
Self-hosting still takes an effort.
It's still more complex than signing up for PaaS (that's why I never criticise PaaS as a delivery).
Docker doesn't make it flat-out harder, just different.
And I say it as someone that self-hosted without Docker before. I am not a die-hard Docker fun.
Still, Kamal is a better Capistrano.
There are several wins:
- You no longer have to describe the deploy process, it's standardized.
- You no longer have to fiddle with application's requirements beyond its Dockerfile.
- You can quickly deploy any particular version that's being built without side-effects.
- You get Kamal Proxy for transparent multi-app deploys or auto-ssl.
And as for the criticism:
- External repository is extra but not that expensive. Also, Kamal team wants to remove this requirement.
- If building locally is not working well or is slow, set up a fast CI deploy (easily done with free GitHub Actions)
As said I do relate to some of this points, but there is no way people go back to Capistrano.
