So you remember how we were told City are refereed more “harshly” and Arsenal more “leniently”? (When in fact they just haven’t been blown up for fouls much.)

Well I went over last season too and it turns out this is a thing. Opposition teams just don’t get free-kicks against City. The serial champions gave away only *51%* of the average amount of free-kicks everyone else in the PL did in 2023-24. The next lowest was Arsenal with 77.3%.

And, yes, this figure is adjusted for possession. It’s almost as if PGMOL has never heard of Rodri.

If you were a Premier League referee and you intended to deliver a title to the bookmakers’ favourites for, like, whatever reason, then a good way of going about it would be to let them get away with murder.

Oh, and you’d also enforce rules you don’t apply to any other team to send off players from their strongest title challengers (for not even committing fouls).

It is essential that the new football regulator either abolishes (preferably) or imposes stringent governance oversight (at the very least) on PGMOL. Because it does not seem to be delivering against its primary responsibility for fair and objective officiating of Premier League matches.

Cesc: “I was lucky enough to be at the training ground recently and it was like I had never been there before. Everything had changed so much. The manager of the training ground said it was 95% Mikel who had changed the whole thing. He’s changed everything…” 🔴⚪️
“The perception of the club in the last few years, a lot of positive messages around the training ground, much bigger facilities, better equipment, the pitches. Everything. You name it. At the entrance they have a symbol of an empty Premier League [trophy cabinet]…” 🔴⚪️
“He wants to show the message. It’s an inspiration every day to go there and prove yourself that you really want to put the Premier League [trophy] in there. I think it’s changed the mentality of the club since Arsène left. It is fantastic what he has done.” 🔴⚪️

OK, so still hearing it doesn’t matter that 60% of all referees hail from the NW of England - there’s no bias. So I thought I’d take a look at penalties stats. I went back across the past five seasons including this one - 1,580 matches. Guess who comes out top…
To smooth anomalies I only included clubs with a minimum of 100 games played (three full seasons). And here is what we find: the club with the most penalties is… Manchester United. Image
To add a bit of context, I also looked at how many touches in the opposition box it takes for clubs to win those pens. Guess who came top for fewest touches? Yep, Man Utd again, needing fully 45.4% fewer touches than the Premier League average. Next highest was Palace at 28.2%.

Now who’ll buy Chelsea? Someone with deep pockets, obvs. Last year they won the Champions League, boosting revenues relative to everyone else’s when costs were reduced by lockdowns. Chelsea made £76.3m in operating cash flow. Tidy.
Operating CF is the money a club generates after it’s fixed costs like wages, utility bills, insurance etc. If a club is run without subsidy, it’s what transfers, sacking managers. debt service and repayments and and stadium/training ground improvements must come out of.
Easily done if you make £76.3m a year. Except Chelsea don’t. Across the previous five years, Chelsea’s net operating cash flow was £7.8m. Or £1.6m a season. So if you’re a billionaire looking for a club, knowing Chelsea fans’ appetite for big-ticket signings, would you buy them?

Well that was certainly the strangest time of my life: uncovering the truth about the fraudster who took Sven and Sol to Notts County. Do have a listen; Ben and Alice have done a great job. #notts bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0…
There was plenty more than the podcast covers, mind. Like the attempt to take over a formula-one team (Sauber), which was blocked after I had Bernie Ecclestone on the phone to tell him all about King’s intentions.
And I can’t let it go without saying the worst part of the podcast is hearing the posh prick Paul Fallon chuckling his way through his tales of King’s frauds he helped facilitate. Fallon was later struck off as a lawyer for being a lying bastard.
