As I reported on the air tonight, the Washington Post registered 1600+ cancelations of digital subscriptions in the first three hours after my story broke, according to internal WP correspondence I’ve reviewed.

That’s bananas.

🧵Some thoughts to keep in mind about CBS

1. Weiss is editor in chief and can weigh in on any news coverage without it being corporate interference.

2. It's impossible to assess her actions - and the reactions - without taking into account the Ellisons & decision to hire her
3. Larry Ellison is a big $ backer and adviser to Trump. David Ellison courted Trump and made conservative concessions to secure support of FCC Chair - a Trump appointee and ally.

4. Weiss' appointment & purchase of Free Press wasn't a formal concession but part of that push
5. Trump made sure Larry Ellison was cut into the TikTok US deal in a major way.

6. The Ellisons are similarly trying to take over Warner Bros Discovery - the parent of CNN, in whose fate Trump has taken a strong interest. US regulators would have to approve for it to happen.

Veteran photographer Michael Nigro was shot in the head with a non-lethal bullet while covering anti-ICE protests in LA. "It felt very very intentional," Nigro tells NPR, "a chilling effect to convince us to go away."

The Los Angeles Press Club says law enforcement officers have violated press freedoms of reporters more than three dozen times.

As others have noted, more accurate to say "less lethal" than non-lethal.

In LA's Echo Park in 2021, police shot reporters with rubber bullets, took them into custody, hit them with batons.

UPDATE: Corporation for Public Broadcasting board passes bylaws stating no board member can be removed by anyone, including the President, without a 2/3 confirming vote from rest of the board.

Move appears to take inspiration from federal judge's remarks yesterday. con't/ 1
Trump had issued executive order purprting to fire 3 members of board - prompting CPB to file suit.

At hearing yesterday, U.S. Judge Randolph Moss had questioned why CPB board had not clarified that Trump (or any other president) could not do that.
From amended bylaw:

"No Director may be removed from the Board by any person or authority, including the President of the United States, without a two-thirds vote of the other Directors confirming such removal..." /MORE

News: The US Agency for Global Media is returning suspended 1,400 employees & contractors of agency and Voice of America back to work - with full access to email and offices.

VoA programs to resume next week following an appeals court ruling last night agst Trump WH./
NPR has reviewed email affirming the reversal from asst US Atty Brenda Gonzalez Horowitz to David Seide, an atty to VoA staffers who sued Kari Lake and the Trump WH.

Seide hails it as a major step but invokes Reagan: “We’re in a trust but verify mode.”

NEWS: There has been a massive offer from Murdoch's camp to resolve the hacking suits from Prince Harry and former MP Tom Watson, according to a person with knowledge.

Few want this more than Wash Post CEO Will Lewis, who is placed at center of allegations of a coverup / MORE
The complaints allege a conspiracy by top Murdoch British executives, including Lewis to conceal criminality at his UK tabloids 14 years ago.

Harry/Watson previously resisted offers, saying Murdoch empire & executives would escape full accountability for what happened at the Sun
Murdoch spokesperson at News UK declined immediate comment as did a lawyer for Harry/Watson

Much activity in lawyers' meeting rooms in the Rolls Building High Court.

NEWS: More than 400 Washington Post journalists - including some of its most distinguished reporters & editors - have sent plea to owner Jeff Bezos to intervene at the paper.

While not citing CEO Will Lewis by name, it casts a harsh light on his leadership./more
The petition reads, in part:

“We are deeply alarmed by recent leadership decisions that have led readers to question the integrity of this institution, broken with a tradition of transparency, and prompted some of our most distinguished colleagues to leave.”
The backlash against Lewis has encompassed Bezos to some degree as well as he publicly warms up to Trump.

The petition however states that the question of the presidential endorsement - which led to 300k+ cancellations in a matter of days - is "the owner's prerogative." MORE
