we have essentially no civic principles in common, so if America is a "civic nation" then we are not "fellow Americans"

they are also >50% immigrants or children of immigrants, so if America is a nation of shared history & lineage, we still aren't "fellow Americans"
this doesn't mean they are all my enemies - or that I don't love my enemies - but we should acknowledge that there are no bonds of belief or mutual obligation or affection between us
Like there is no way to argue that this kind of thing should be Canadians' problem

These people are very obviously not Canadian in any sense, this is not a Canadian situation

"Canada" can not have any meaningful definition that incorporates this protest

In the three countries in which it arose, fascism was a reaction of the middle-class to the unwillingness or incapacity of the ruling class to resist communism

In each case the ruling class (correctly) regarded the fascists as boorish, historically illiterate, & dangerous

Dune 2 is about God making fools of everyone including Denis Villeneuve & Frank Herbert

There's a true story here & it's just extremely obvious where the storytellers are not true to it

The stuff that doesn't work sticks out so clearly as an edit, not of a piece with the whole
Timothèe Chalameê: mostly very good

The parts where he is "acting" Messianic are where he is most true & believable

The parts where he resists his mission & despairs that they won't let him be a humble ordinary boy ring false

If a category includes everything, it means nothing

"limiting" & "exclusionary" is literally what categories are

of course he's implying some ineffable *spiritual* essence to Scottishness but if you try to nail him down on who exemplifies it he'll say that's exclusionary too
And if there is some ineffable spiritual essence to Scottishness, do we offer govt benefits or franchise only to True Scotsmen?

Obviously not - the purpose of this kind of talk is not to define the category under consideration but to eradicate it

When we talk about a War on Distinction it doesn't just mean moral distinctions, but actually distinctions of any kind

"Noticing" is not a euphemism for noticing a particular set of ideologically inconvenient facts, but noticing as such

Disparate impact is the stealth abolition of private property

Disparate impact renders all goods de facto non-excludable - anything you offer to customers must also be accessible to vandals & parasites

Which means that all goods become a Commons, subject to the Tragedy thereof
Disparate impact is not an immediate & direct abolition of property because the impact is examined in court, case by case

So instead of a spasm of bolshevik violence you have this spreading tumor of communist dysfunction in every domain where disparate impact has been tested

If HBD is not real, then disparate outcomes are prima facie evidence of discrimination

Because HBD is real, disparate outcomes are ubiquitous
