In 2013, 5 friends wanted to copy Wattpad's success n India.

Everyone thought they'd FAIL to make people read LONG stories when 15-second REELS and TikTok ruled.

But to everyone's SHOCK, there are 2.5 CRORE readers on Pratilipi!

Why Pratilipi didn't fail: Image
Reels are the new legal drug.

• They release a TON of dopamine, making you want it more and more.
• They are so 'short' that an hour seems to fly by,
• BUT, you cannot even remember the third last reel you watch.

Yet in the world of 15s drugs, how did a LONG form Pratilipi win? Let's start from the very beginning
1️⃣ BookWorm

Pratap Singh faced a common dilemma:

Love something (reading Hindi). Went to someplace (college). Couldn't do what you love anymore.

And like everyone else, he cribbed about it. Only there was one difference:
2️⃣ The Real Difference

“I told myself, if you are doing so well at the age of 24, then you must be doing something wrong,” he says. “So, I quit.”

He would now focus on solving the problem which troubled him in his college time: Hindi Reading materials.
3️⃣ Why?

He spoke to around 350 authors, and 300 readers and found something shocking.

It wasn't that (hindi) stories weren't written OR that no one wanted to read.

But the problem was how to connect them both.
4️⃣ Wattpad.

He was really inspired by Wattpad. The American Self-Publishing was a craze in the US.

He wanted to copy Wattpad's success. But how would he do that?

The authors wanted readers. However, readers only come when there are authors.
5️⃣ Authors First

Harry Potter is the second-highest-selling book after the Bible. Yet 12 publications rejected it.

Pratilipi understood its goal: To not let any future Local JK Rowling go unnoticed.

They fired authors. Instead, they admitted partners.
6️⃣ Free Dom

Authors write. But partners connect. That was Pratilipi's goal.

They organized workshops, seminars. Heck! They even allowed senior authors to instruct the junior authors!

This had a wonderful after-effect:
7️⃣ Second Order Effect

Authors shared their Pratilipi stories on social media, generating organic traffic

They'd speak about Pratilipi's behaviour to their author friends, motivating more authors to join.

And a happy author meant a happy store of new reads!
8️⃣ Lockdown, now what?

Came TikTok.

15s shorts killed our focus. Reels became the new legal drug.

But Pratilipi found their way out. All because of authors.
9️⃣ The Boom Bam

They had almost a lakh authors, writing in 12 different languages.

There were stories for each genre, each topic, each language.

And for elders, who weren't used to Reels, and loved reading, these new stories literally HOOKED them.

Not to forget, their awesome recommendation algorithm was a killer!
🔟 Grow Up

Later, they introduced subscriptions to earn revenue for themselves and the authors.

But a subscription could only get them X money. How to get more?

Answer: Licensing.

They realized what works in one format (text), works in the other (video)

So they started to license their hit stories, like Murdon Ki Train.
Today, there are more than

• 2.7 LAKH writers
• 27 LAKH stories
• 2.5 CRORE readers

on Pratilipi.

Although they are in losses, it's our pride that India has a site where any Indic boy or girl can express his creativeness, for free.
Also, kudos to all other co-founders as well, Sahradayi Modi, S. Devarajan, Rahul Ranjan, and Prashant Gupta.

The biggest thing I learn from him is that

• It's okay to crib and move on. But when given a chance, only true men leave everything to solve the original problem.

What do YOU learn from them?
That's all for today!

If you see a McLaren go past, you say "What a car"

But if you see a Rolls Royce go past, you say "What a man".

But guess what? Rolls Royce wasn't created by a rich kid of Harvard Grad.

But an uneducated poor boy who spent his childhood delivering newspapers.

Rolls Royce story is more valuable than its car:Image
If I could call anyone unlucky, it’d be Henry Royce.

At 4 years old, his family went bankrupt. He lost his father when he was 9.

He had to leave school to deliver newspapers to survive.

But how did this uneducated child create the world’s most prestigious car brand?
1️⃣ Uneducated Genius.

Education is of no use if you don't have the hunger for it.

And Henry was not one of them. His poverty didn't impact his curiosity.

At 15, when he got to work at Great Northen Railway as a (child) apprentice thanks to his aunty, he QUIT.

This is your offering to god?

A beautiful, golden-hued flower, which ends up polluting her other creation?

And to top it off, people bathed and drank in these waters!

2 Friends saw this and decided this needed to change.

Here's the amazing story of PHOOL: Image
1️⃣ Friends Forever.

Ankit was a happy employee at Symantec (Norton Security).

He had many foreign friends, one of whom visited India for 'sightseeing'.

He visited the usual - Taj Mahal, Bombay, Delhi.

But Ankit was unhappy. "That's not the real India. The Real India is in Tier2+".
2️⃣ Sightseeing.

So he came to Kanpur, and along with Ankit, he visited the Ganga ghats.

It was Makar Sankranti, and people were bathing in the holy river.

But his friend was aghast. How could people bathe and drink this DIRTY MUDDY WATER?

In 2013, two IIM alumnus left their jobs to start selling MILK.

Everyone thought they'd FAIL to sell premium milk in a price-sensitive market like India where AMUL ruled.

But to everyone's SHOCK, it became a leader by selling ₹1380 CRORE items in a year!

Why Country Delight didn't fail:Image
Selling milk in India is the hardest thing to do. Because

• Your product expires in 4 days.
• The margins are just 3-5%
• If you falter even once, you'll lose the customer and your business.

But Chakradhar and Nitin did this without relying on others. Here's his crazy story:
1️⃣ Cliche

If you buy a car, It depreciates over time. But if you buy cattle, It multiplies over time!

While other's laugh and move on, Chakradhar and Nitin took it too seriously.

Forget cars, they were now going to buy cows. 50 of them.

What a man.

He was denied entry to the Cecil Hotel because of his clothes.

So he bought the hotel.

The crazy part? He had no degree or money when he started.

You spend ₹30,000 a night at Oberoi, spend 3 minutes reading its mind-blowing story Image
Mohan Singh Oberoi was an unlucky child.

At just 6 months of age, he lost his father.

Even though he was admitted into the DAV College, Lahore, he had to leave it due to financial constraints.

But they say God tests only those who are capable of being tested. Mohan was one of them. Why? Read on
1️⃣ The Uneducated Educated

Enlightenment isn't taught. It's lived. Education isn't taught. It's learned.

And no matter the degree, Oberoi was highly educated.

Instead of working as a robot, he studied every part of the Shoe Factory he worked in.

He became the General Manager, before the factory shut down.

In 2009, Cerana entered India importing beers.

Everyone thought it would FAIL to sell its 'premium' beers in Kingfishers and Carlsberg's INDIA.

But to their shock, Bira went on to sell 12 MILLION cases every year.

Here's the story of Bira91 (and can it be the next Blinkit?) Image
After completing his master's from Illinois Institute of Technology in 2002, Ankur Jain wanted to do some 'startup'.

So after a short stint at Motorola, he started Reliant MD, a healthcare revenue management software.

But he ended up building India's largest craft beer company, selling ~800 Cr worth of beers in a year. How?
1️⃣ The NYC Effect.

Ankur wasn't a big fan of beers.

But NYC culture led him to Brooklyn Brewery (BB), a popular micro-brewery in NYC.

And he became an instant fan of it.

EVs are failing.

Once deemed to be the star of automobiles, it is not selling that fast anymore.

The reason? Hybrids.

Here's why Hybrids have become the new talk in town. Image
If you own an EV, there is ONE big question always in front of you:

"What if the charge runs out while running? "

It's true. Range anxiety is the leading cause of EVs not selling.
But the case is different for Hybrids.

See, there are 3 common types of hybrids in the market

1. "Smart" or FAKE Hybrid
2. Normal, Strong Hyrbid.
3. Plug-In Hybrid Vehicles.

Of these,
