🧵 🚨Breast binding is a medical intervention.

Breast, chest & abdominal binders are commonly used outside of gender medicine for short periods of time (maximum 6 weeks) under clinical supervision to aid in post surgical recovery.

Like with other trans-medical interventions, this one is used off label for treating gender dysphoria. There is no limit on how many days, months, years or decades these medical devices are reccomended to be used for, because it is a physical/medical treatment for feelings about your gender that could last or could decipate.

Breast binders are used & recommended by gender clinicians and by WPATH as treatments for gender dysphoria.

They permanently alter the body through long-term physical compression of the breasts, ribs and lungs, complete with documented risks like tissue damage, restricted breathing, rib damage, permanent changes to the form and function of the breasts, skin issues, musculoskeletal damage and others.

To deny this fact is to be deliberately obtuse.

Even some trans activists are beginning to move in the direction of admitting that gender-affirming breast binding cannot be done safely (though their pivot is to encourage the validity of gender-affirming mastectomies moreso than to discourage binding, which OPs framing despite coming from a place of alleged detrans advocacy, endorses somehow)

All trans medical interventions that categorically alter the body, binders very much included, exist primarily to extend the shelf life of a social transition, making the cross-sex presentation more believable and sustainable over time.

Even a purely social transition, with no permanent physical changes, is still called social transition, not social persistence, for a reason. It is an active intervention: a deliberate choice to live and present as the opposite sex, rooted in the conviction that one's sense of self requires crossing sex categories to feel authentic or sane. (The former wording is Gen Z coded and the latter is everyone else coded)

On the absurd dichotomy of who desisters and detransitioners are/ which experiences define them (as someone who has spent hundreds of hours immersed in the literature on this subtopic)

Desistance in the clinical literature on gender dysphoria has always described the natural cessation of cross-sex ideation and dissatisfaction with one’s sex, measured by the fading desire to pursue any form of transition (role and body/ appearance modification).

It referred specifically to the cross-sex desire fading over time in cohorts of young boys who presented with distress about their sex prior to puberty.

With the natural changes of puberty and often psychological/ play-based interventions which encouraged natal sex identification, many simply grew out of it. Their cross sex desires desisted. They were the “desisters.” Their counterparts with enduring cross sex ideation were the “persisters.” The dichotomy was always “desisters v. persisters” rather than “desisters v. detransitioners.”

That was the context. Early onset gender distress in boys who without any transition intervention, but with other psychological interventions, mostly grew out of those desires.

There were no puberty blockers offered to most of these boys (until the later Dutch studies which still measured desistance as cessation of transition desire as a variable independent of medical or social intervention precisely to test the impact of said intervention on cementing cross sex identities) ***because**** the interventions at the time were psychological and aimed at reconciling the boy with his sexed body and role.

As such, social transitions were neither recommended nor possible in the stage of life through which desistance occurred. This changed with the Dutch protocol, but even they recommended against social transition prior to puberty for fear of needlessly cementing cross sex identities.

Even then, there were no whole cohorts of teenaged girls declaring specifically “I’m trans/non-binary, give me hormones” for the first time in early adolescence. The reason desistance was used purely to describe a psychological state of cessation of cross-sex desire fading with time was because the clinicians were trying to determine which underlying factors might cause a young boy’s dissatisfaction with growing into a man to either necessitate intervention as an adult or not, and the scope of analysis was focused on sexual orientation in later stages of adolescence and early adulthood. Studies from that era, like those by Zucker and others, documented desistance rates often exceeding 80% in these unmedicated boy cohorts once puberty took its natural course.

And btw in those days, even social transitions (the real life test) for adults were interventions recommended by clinicians in a rigorous gatekeeping process before hormonal interventions were prescribed, to act as a measure by which to assess transition fitness.

Nowadays, social transition is not an intervention doctors need to prescribe. Though in the past, it was.

Both the parents of young children who see something about trans kids on the internet, and teenagers and adults of any age don’t need a medical permission slip to cross-dress in public, to socially or legally change their name, or to change their sex marker. They just go ahead and do it.

In the same way, breast binders, though they don’t need to be prescribed to access them, still are recommended by pediatric gender doctors who publish entire guidelines endorsing these medical interventions as treatments for gender dysphoria.

Also btw, breast binding used to be an entirely DIY practice that doctors didn’t endorse, prescribe or recommend when it was done with duct tape. But now, with commercial grade breast binders available on the market, these practices are granted clinical legitimacy in the halls of gender medicine. They have become totally legitimized medical treatments with a false veneer of safety simply because they’re now clinically endorsed despite zero studies showing anything but long-term harm in 97.2% of cases as per a 2016 study.

Hell, even cross-sex hormones can be accessed these days without a prescription, often through unregulated online pharmacies and homebrew networks that have few if any safeguards against minors or adults ordering them.

And if you have enough money, you don’t need to get a diagnosis for insurance to cover a gender procedure. You can pay out of pocket.

Every step of transition intervention from social, to legal, to medical, to surgical, has a non-clinical or non-formal diagnostic route these days.

Gender transitions are increasingly becoming an almost fully DIY enterprise, and they have been trending in this direction for a while for those who have fallen asleep at the wheel.

Earth-shattering experiences running from Jihadist rockets in the Middle East +

Algorithms that introduced me to Charlie Kirk’s (@charliekirk11) compelling debate style which then fed me tons of other anti-woke content.

Yes, I needed all three of these things (including war-related psychological trauma, my woke friends accusing ME of coming to my anti-Jihad views from a “place of privilege”— as I ran from rockets while they sat in safety sipping on their boba teas in the USA 🇺🇸) to truly understand just how vile woke ideas are when they’re put into practice.
