"A father attacks his wife 23 times with a knife. He then kills his two children, aged 2 and 5, starts a fire and swallows windshield washer fluid to take his own life. Three cold-blooded murders committed by a father who has since become a woman."
That's the theory the Crown presented to the jury Monday at the start of this trial at the Longueuil courthouse. Mohamed Al Ballouz, who now identifies herself as a woman named Levana Ballouz, is accused of the second-degree murder of his partner Synthia Bussières and the first-degree murder of their children Zac, 2, and Eliam, 5.
In the dock, Levana Ballouz presented herself as a woman: long dyed blond hair, fitted purple jacket, tight sweater, red nail polish. However, at the time of the events, the accused presented herself "physically as a man," explained Crown prosecutor Laurence Lamoureux.

"I heard my colleague shout: victim, victim, victim," said firefighter Benoît Laramée, who discovered the body of a woman next to the bath.
A colleague then discovered a child. "He was in his underwear," said the first witness in the trial.
In her cross-examination, the accused described the arrival of the firefighters at the apartment as a “break-in.” “Did you see the accused kill anyone,” the accused asked. “No,” the witness replied.
In its opening statement, the Crown described a horrific scene: Synthia Bussière's body lay in a pool of blood in the bathroom. She had been stabbed 23 times, according to the prosecution.

The Crown's theory is that the accused tried to "destroy the evidence" before killing her children. How did they die? The Crown did not specify in its opening statement.
Surveillance videos that will be introduced into evidence will show Al Ballouz moving around the building that night. "We will see him carrying beer and windshield washer fluid," Lamoureux said .
The trial, presided over by Judge Eric Downs, is scheduled to last about ten weeks.
