A revealing app. by Kayleigh Spires, Network Rail's National Programme Dir. for 'Access for All' at the London Assembly Tpt. Committee today.
Much to pick apart. An admission that "this delivery (for CP6) hasn't gone as well as it should have done for our passengers". 1/10 🧵
You don't say!!!
A further admission that some stations awarded 'Access for All' funding in 2019 (for completion in Control Period 6) won't be completed until years 1,2 and in some cases year 3 of CP7. (2024-2029)
2/10
Further, there was an acceptance that as a result of these delays, some of the 50 stations awarded A4A funding for CP7 (2024-2029) may potentially be delayed until CP8 (2029-2034). 3/10
There was also a discussion about #PalmersGreen and #AlexandraPalace stations, originally awarded funding in 2014! I've discussed delays to these and other stations in the blog below.... 4/10 julianvaughan.blog/2024/08/09/a-d…
I'm going to take a look at the claim that 54% of UK stations are step-free as I'm not sure if this includes 'cross-platform' access. A partially accessible station isn't really accessible at all... 5/10
An interesting discussion about how the data from the recent audit of all UK railway stations (conducted by Atkins and completed in late 2023) is being released to the rail industry. The @nationalrailenq website and the 'Access Map' are currently littered with errors... 6/10
Also discussions about the competitive bidding process, which I've previously described as a 'bunfight', level boarding, stakeholder engagement, toilet provision and how the upcoming GBR model will improve the situation. 7/10
I had to chuckle grimly when an assembly member asked if after 20 years of the A4A scheme being in existence, schemes are being delivered faster and cheaper!
The answer was clearly no!
8/10
As always, there was a statement that an accessible rail network is a top priority.
I should point out that apart from the recently announced 50 stations awarded A4A funding for CP7, to date no additional funds have been forthcoming. At the current rate.... 9/10
...it will be around 100 years before the rail network is fully accessible.
We have to do better than this.
This is just a very short summary. A detailed blog to follow. Thanks for reading.

A common theme running through tragedies such as the Horizon, Grenfell and Hillsborough is the nauseating confidence and casual indifference shown by those responsible.
So from where does this confidence originate? A 🧵1/16
#PostOfficeScandal #Grenfell #Hillsborough #JFT97
I believe it is a confidence emboldened by a number of factors:
1: Unequal access to the law - those with the deepest pockets win, and the threat of legal action and lack whistleblower protection discourages reporting of unsafe practices.
2/16
2: weak oversight and regulation - with regulations being primarily seen as a ‘burden to business’ rather than vital checks and balances to prevent profit being put ahead of people.
