Why growing numbers of Scottish women are seeking abortions in England
I interviewed a brave woman, who wishes to stay anonymous, who spoke to me about the traumatic journey down from Scotland to England to have an abortion.
“It was not a trip she wanted to make, but like many other women in Scotland who need surgical terminations after 13 weeks she had very little choice.”
- Alarmingly, there is only one surgeon in Scotland who is trained to carry out a surgical abortion after 13 weeks.
There is a rising number of women who are travelling to abortion clinics in England and Wales.
Dr Ed Dorman, who works @BPAS1968 Richmond clinic, has said surgeons are concerned that “there are inevitably going to be women in Scotland who cannot manage the journey down.”
They are then forced to have unplanned/ unwanted pregnancies. @backoffscotland
@BPAS1968 @backoffscotland Rebecca (not her real name) told me: “The requirement to travel is taking away choice from plenty of women and finances should not have a bearing.”
