Romania’s tumultuous history has always oscillated between East and West, swinging from one extreme form of governance to another. Today, its stability is under threat once again with the Putin-loving, fascist, antisemite, Calin Georgescu leading the presidential race. Thread 👇
5 reasons why what’s happening in Romania matters: 1. Romania is a key NATO ally, and the biggest NATO hub in Europe. Georgescu would end that.
2 Romania shares a long border with Ukraine, it’s an important ally for Zelensky, and place of refuge for millions of Ukrainians. Georgescu would flip Romania to the dark side.
3 There are deep historic bonds between the UK and Romania – Queen Marie of Romania was Queen Victoria’s granddaughter. She was instrumental in uniting the country after WWI to become Romania ‘dodoloata’ – chubby Romania. Georgescu would turn his back on that.
4 Over many centuries, Romania has had only bad experiences with Russia. Moscow took all Romania's gold in WWII and never returned it. Romania must not become a Russian satellite now – that will be the effect of electing Georgescu.
5 Romania’s culture, traditions, folklore are sewn into the rich tapestry of European tradition and thinking. Dadaism, Surrealism, Theatre of the Absurd, Modernism, all have roots in Romania. Georgescu will take it back to the dark ages, even denying man landed on the moon.
