A decade ago, Metaxas was on track to be a popular & respected evangelical public intellectual. Raised in NYC & educated at Yale, he styled himself as an erudite & engaged public figure.
He wrote pop biographies of William Wilberforce, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, & Martin Luther. 2/
In truth, Metaxas has no pedigree as a historian nor as a theologian, but he wrote enticing books that spoke in evangelical-friendly ways about evangelical heroes.
Real scholars pointed out these books were littered w/ factual errors & poor analysis. 3/
Metaxas earned evangelical kudos for his 2012 keynote address at the National Prayer Breakfast where he spoke about the pro-life cause directly to Pres. Obama & Speaker Pelosi.
He cast himself as an articulate & bright evangelical political gadfly. 4/
Early on in his Trump-supporting days, Metaxas tried to couch his support w/ the common "lesser of two evils" trope.
He even called Trump's ascendance "a symptom of our fading virtue & faith."
But the thing about Christian Trump support is: It doesn't stay mild for long... 6/
Once on board the Trump train, Metaxas has made a fool of himself like all other Trump defenders.
He even stuck w/ Trump after the Access Hollywood ("Grab 'em by the ______") video broke, while acknowledging that Trump is "someone many think odious." 7/
In Sept 2020, Metaxas was visiting the White House, & he famously punched a protester on a bicycle (then bizarrely jogged away backward, seemingly giddy).
Re: Trump's election lies, Metaxas said, “we need to fight to the death, to the last drop of blood, b/c it’s worth it.”
He said to anyone not supporting Trump's lies: "you are the Germans that looked the other way when Hitler was preparing to do what he was preparing to do." 10/
Note the changeover: In 2016, Trump was the lesser of two evils & a sign of America's degradation.
By 2020, anyone not supporting Trump is on the side of Hitler.
This would soon become Metaxas' favorite accusation, lambasting anyone living in factual reality as a Nazi. 11/
Metaxas' performance @ the Jericho March even caused his friend Rod Dreher -- who actually defended Metaxas punching the protester months before! -- to call him:
"A religious zealot... [who] conflates religion w/ politics, & politics w/ religion." 12/
Since January 6th, Metaxas has joined the ranks of Trump's most obsequious court jesters, slavishly defending Trump's every lie, criminal act, & authoritarian threat.
He even shared a post comparing Trump's criminal conviction to Jesus'.
Along the way (& this is why he's on my radar), Metaxas started hanging out with a lot of other right-wing Christian influencers, especially of the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) variety.
Including: Ché Ahn, the FlashPoint prophecy crew, Bill & Beni Johnson, & Sean Feucht. 14/
Metaxas has also persisted in attacking his enemies as Nazis.
To be clear: Metaxas is arguing that anti-Nazi heroes like Bonhoeffer would have supported Trump, while anyone who opposes Trump must be supporting Hitler (i.e., liberals like Joe Biden?).
It's head-spinning. 15/
He even wrote a (shockingly popular) book & helped shape a documentary film making this very argument.
He's spent the last yr brow-beating pastors to screen his film at their churches by encouraging his rabid followers to leave any church if the pastor refuses to screen it. 16/
This is the context in which, in Oct 2024, a group of respected Bonhoeffer scholars (top-notch theologians & historians, some of whom are my friends) to denounce Metaxas' distortions, the book, & the film.
Also, a group of 86 of Bonhoeffer's closest relatives -- he didn't have children, these are his nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, etc. -- issued a statement last month, calling out Metaxas by name for "misrepresent[ing] Bonhoeffer." 18/
Which brings us to Metaxas' most recent, vicious, & jaw-dropping attack:
In an interview with Glenn Beck this week, Metaxas fired back at Bonhoeffer's relatives calling them "distant relatives who are guaranteed pro-Hamas lunatics... Jew-hating lunatics." 19/
Yes, Metaxas, a serial liar, Trump propagandist, faux Xn intellectual, is scurrilously labeling the family of Bonhoeffer "Jew-hating lunatics."
Mind you, multiple members of the family, not only Dietrich, were executed for trying to stop Hitler. 20/
I understand that these might seem like intra-evangelical spats, but something far greater is at stake here.
By coopting Bonhoeffer's anti-fascist & anti-nationalist legacy, Metaxas is weaponizing a theological hero as a pro-nationalist, pro-fascist symbol for evangelicals. 21/
Many evangelicals still listen to Metaxas' opinions, & he's become one of Trump's most effective messagers to Christians.
In this reality-distortion role, he is in the company of: Lance Wallnau, Charlie Kirk, Paula White-Cain, & the NAR.
They spin Trump's lies into gospel. 22/
Metaxas has even, this election cycle, become a member of Trump's official National Faith Advisory Board, the latest iteration of Trump's evangelical advisory council.
This means that, in a 2nd Trump admin, EM will have even more access & influence. 23/
I know it's a chaotic time w/ Trump's nominees burning up the headlines, but we need more news coverage & exposure on people like Eric Metaxas.
It's mendacious messengers like him that helped get Trump elected & who will staff Trump's ministry of disinformation come January. 24/

Yesterday Trump announced he's nominating Pete Hegseth as his Secretary of Defense.
Hegseth's a prominent Fox News personality & veterans advocate, but he also has strong ties to the Christian far right that I've not seen fully exposed yet.
Here's a thread w/ receipts... 1/
1st, what's the Christian far right?
It's a coalition of different Christian social movts bound together by aggressive theologies & (often but not always) white supremacy.
This is the extreme, militant end of the spectrum of what is popularly called "Christian nationalism." 3/
Theologically & socially, there are at least 3 distinct, major strands of the Amer Christian far right today (w/ lots of smaller ones too):
1) Radical Traditionalist Catholic networks & influencers, Opus Dei, etc. -- This is the world of JD Vance. Not my area of expertise. 4/
It's bracing to hear the dauntless words that theological giants used to hold each other to the cause of resisting fascism.
This 1933 letter from Karl Barth to Dietrich Bonhoeffer -- "You are a German & the house of your church is burning" -- summons us to Christian courage. 1/
We don't know whether 2025 will be a 1933. These things can happen fast. Dachau concentration camp was opened in March 1933 -- 2 months after Hitler came to power.
But we do know that's where casual dehumanization & demonization of vulnerable communities leads eventually. 2/
Trump & his regime have already found their "court evangelicals" (h/t @JohnFea1) who will genuflect & offer to bless his every despotic whim & assertion.
Pastors, theologians, Bible professors, & religion scholars: now is the time to find the courage of Barth & Bonhoeffer. 3/
I've tried to approach this election unflinchingly & w/ clear eyes, but this is the absolute worst case scenario.
We're in an epochal shift in American history of the worst sort, &, while it does not spell the absolute end of Amer liberal democracy, MAGA is a fatal illness. 1/
I've been ruminating since last night over this quote from John Adams:
"Remember Democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes exhausts & murders itself. There never was a Democracy Yet, that did not commit suicide. It's in vain to Say that Democracy is less vain, less proud... 2/
"less selfish, less ambitious or less avaricious than Aristocracy or Monarchy. It's not true in Fact & no where appears in history. Those Passions are the same in all Men under all forms of Simple Govt, & when unchecked, produce the same Effects of Fraud Violence and Cruelty." 3/
This is a disgusting & unbelievably irresponsible thing for a pastor to post on election day!
Landon Schott is a pastor at Mercy Culture, a hyper-political, charismatic church in the DFW area. Sean Feucht shows up there regularly, & he shared a stage w/ Feucht in DC on 10/26. 1/
If you don't know the reference here, many charismatics have railed for decades against the "spirit of Jezebel" (a demon representing feminism, LGBTQ rights, abortion, etc.) taking over the US.
Here is Schott's wife, Heather, on stage w/ NAR apostle Ché Ahn on 10/12 when he issued his decree that Trump (Jehu) would win & Jezebel (Harris) would be "cast out" -- an unmistakeable reference to Jezebel's execution in 2 Kings 9, the same passage Schott highlights today. 3/
I know Trump's rally at MSG got lots of press attn for its fascistic undertones, but the most fascistic thing to happen this week in Trump world -- in my view -- is this prophecy spoken over Trump by Messianic rabbi Jonathan Cahn at a relig ldrs event. 1/
You'll need some context to understand what he's saying in this prophecy, but I promise: When you understand the message he's conveying to Trump & to this audience, it's chilling.
1st, who is Jonathan Cahn?
He's mostly likely the most famous Messianic Jew in America today. 2/
Cahn has so many NY Times bestselling books, he's probably 1 of the most-read & most-followed religious figures in the entire U.S., but he's gotten little mainstream media attention.
Excellent (& terrifying) reporting here from @AndyKroll & @mtredden about how Russ Vought, a far-right extremist former OMB director & likely 2nd Trump Admin cabinet member, is thinking about the agenda for Trump 2.0...
Something we must all grasp heading into this election is how much Trump's lies about the 2020 election have become a new "lost cause" narrative, propagandizing & radicalizing many far-right actors to attack democracy in the name of defending the Constitution. 2/
In truth, our civic crisis today rests upon an even deeper & more far-reaching epistemic crisis -- a crisis in how we know what we know.
1/3 of Americans today believe Trump's 2020 lies, & that reality distortion field is warping their very citizenship & view of democracy. 3/
