I think it's important to talk about the role of Class in Smash

"Getting good" and "getting ranked" is not just a representation of having skill or talent, but also class and resources

Thread: (1/6)
1. "Getting Good"

Class deeply affects improvement when it comes to Smash

You have the time to practice (Not working)

You have the computer and the connection in order to grind online

You have the means to travel and enter tournaments to play the best and learn from it

2. "Getting Ranked"

You have to attend 3-4 moderate to large scale tournaments to get ranked in Melee

This requires at a minimum, around $200 to $400 for entry fees

To travel to events you have to be able to take off work, pay for housing, travel, and other expenses

(3/6)
These things aren't easy, and in a game which doesn't sponsor a lot of our high to even top level talent it limits our rankings a lot

The top 100 is less of a "Who are the 100 best players" and is more "Who are the 100 best players who could afford to come"

(4/6)
When we don't count netplay, locals , or smaller events, our rankings become exclusionary

Now if you can only travel to 3 events, you have added pressures from knowing you have to perform or you won't be ranked

People who can travel to 5+ events don't have that pressure.

(5/6)
To end this off I just want to say

Of course skill or talent plays some factor

Some people pick up things quicker, Some people never grasp key concepts, etc

However the more you play the game, the more you improve, and Time is much cheaper for those who have more of it
