Many African societies recognized same-sex relationships in various forms. In some cultures, such as among the Zande people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, same-sex relationships were accepted and even institutionalized, with male warriors forming bonds that included sexual components.
The colonial era brought significant changes. European colonial powers imposed their own laws and moral standards, criminalizing homosexuality and enforcing heteronormative structures. This led to the stigma surrounding same-sex relationships, in many African countries today.
Today some Right-wing Christian evangelicals are actively promoting anti-gay laws in Africa, pushing agendas that often lead to increased discrimination and violence against LGBTQ+ individuals. Their influence can be seen in various countries, where they align with local political leaders to enact and enforce these harmful laws.
