I’m going to translate this speech by a former detainee because I believe it’s very important as we navigate uncertainty:
“I was detained 7 times (by the regime). They killed my brother and nephew. If I saw their killers now, I would just say to them “may god forgive you”.
“Today, all the blood is gone. Today is not a day of revenge. Today is a day of forgiveness. They killed us and we will forgive them. Look here *indicates to his arms*, my body is full of bruises (from torture).”
2/4
“Don’t curse, don’t break things. Everyone who has an Alawite, Shiite or Christian friend, reassure them.
We need to stop firing live ammunition into the air.”
3/4
“May god not forgive a single one of you who harms a POW (from the regime), or who harms an Alwaite or curses a Druze, Shiite or Christian.”

You didn’t fail Syria. We liberated our country. You failed yourselves. You failed your principles and professed solidarity with the oppressed. At best, you were silent. At worst, you supported a mass-murdering dictator.
We won’t forget your sneering about war crimes committed and your scoffing as you denied them. We won’t forget the mental gymnastics you performed to whitewash this regime and its allies, or to paint them out as a necessary evil. We won’t forget how you tried to smear our memory.
I don't think people fully appreciate the nightmare that is the Syrian security state.
Recently, Syrians at home and in the diaspora have had to remind others that they are unable to comment on anything happening in the country, or say anything critical of the regime.
It doesn't matter if you live abroad. The reason I (like other Syrians on here) don't show my picture or my name is because I still have family in Syria.
The Assad regime is merciless. Not only will you be blacklisted and arrested upon entry, but your family will be targeted.
They'll be arrested, and in the regime's detention centres, it's more than likely that that will be the last anyone sees of them
You might have seen how Assad's Syrian supporters openly celebrate our inability to enter the country while the regime is in power, they're not lying.
