Does poverty cause crime?
Rates of rape between strangers correlate at .79 with rates of burglary, and rates of rape are about as correlated with robbery+auto theft+larceny as is burglary itself. Moreover, rape is roughly as correlated with these four theft offenses as it is with homicide and with aggravated assault. Further still, these two violent offenses are roughly as correlated with rape as they are with burglary (assault, moreso):

If theft were born of material necessity, then said necessity shouldn't be expected to also lead to rapes. Instead, the correlations don't seem to differ appreciably in the way we'd expect if this were the case.
