UPDATE: Physicians for Human Rights - Israel (PHRI) has filed a petition with the Israeli High Court of Justice (HCJ) on Thursday, demanding immediate disclosure of the location of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, Director of Kamal Adwan Hospital.
Despite clear documentation of his arrest, the military officially informed PHRI today “that a review has found no indication of the arrest or detention of the individual in question.”
Drop Site is reposting the PHRI thread update on Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya’s whereabouts, in English. 🔽
In response to a request PHRI submitted on behalf of his family to coordinate a lawyer’s visit, the IDF—the body responsible for facilitating the military’s ability to ascertain the location of Palestinian detainees and prisoners from the Gaza Strip—stated that they have no indication of his arrest or detention.
On December 27, Israeli army forces invaded Kamal Adwan Hospital, surrounded the building, and arrested Dr. Abu Safiya. In a video recording, the senior doctor was seen walking towards a military armored personnel carrier before being taken away for questioning. On the same day, an army spokesman confirmed his arrest and transfer for questioning, but since then, there has been no further trace of him. Unfortunately, the court granted the state a week to respond regarding the whereabouts of the hospital director.
Since October 2023, Israel has detained thousands of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, including 230 doctors. The whereabouts and fate of many are unknown, and requests to locate them have gone unanswered for months.
In some cases, it was only due to the persistence of human rights organizations that information was provided about the whereabouts of the missing. In some instances, it was revealed that those missing had died in the custody of the army or prison service.
Drop Site News is calling on the US @StateDept to demand immediate information about Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya’s whereabouts and to take action for his release. Please sign the petition urging the U.S. government to secure Dr. Abu Safiya’s safe return.
Israel’s “Guantanamo Bay,” the Sde Teiman detention camp, now operates at reduced capacity following international outrage over shocking footage of the gang rape of a detainee by Israeli prison guards in July 2024, along with extensive evidence of widespread torture and sexual abuse.
New reporting from Physicians for Human Rights Israel (PHRI) reveals that severe human rights violations remain rampant across Israeli detention facilities and prisons, which are currently holding at least 6,000 Palestinians that Israel admits to have detained from Gaza since October 7, 2023.

Since May 2024, Ofer Military Prison in the Occupied West Bank has been increasingly used to detain Israeli military’s captives from Gaza. Other facilities now in use include Anatot military camp (also in the West Bank), Naftali and Amiad military camps (northern Israel), and Ktzi’ot Prison (southern Israel).
Lawyers and detainees say conditions directly threaten the survival of those held in the facilities, with at least 54 Palestinians having died in Israeli prisons and camps since October 7, 2023.
Ofer Military Prison recently made headlines when detained orthopedic surgeon Adnan Al Bursh died with significant evidence of torture. Detainees there describe inhumane conditions involving:
➤ Constant physical restraint; hours-long stress positions.
➤ Concrete floors & metal beds with thin, torn mattresses.
➤ No lighting; toilets located in the center of cells.
➤ Drinking water sourced from toilet taps.
➤ Clothes going unchanged for weeks.
➤ Mattresses and blankets confiscated in the morning, leaving detainees on cold concrete, returned only at night.
➤ Meals lacking basic nutrition: a few slices of bread with small box of cheese, jam, or spread, and occasionally a single vegetable.
Thread: Dr. Mimi Syed, a US emergency physician, has shared with Drop Site News an alarming report about the devastating injuries caused by cube-shaped shrapnel released from missiles during Israel’s airstrikes targeting large groups of civilians.
“The shrapnel causes catastrophic injuries, especially in children,” Dr. Syed, who has just returned from her second medical mission to Gaza, said. 🧵⬇️
“From the outside, the marks are barely visible. Inside, they cause massive internal damage, tunneling through the body and leading to fatal bleeding.”
Dr. Syed described treating a 9-year-old girl who was paralyzed after a shard severed her spinal cord.
🚨Breaking: Israel announces a dramatic expansion to its ‘Hasbara’ (propaganda) operations in 2025 budget. The Foreign Ministry will receive an additional $150 million on top of its existing budget, marking a staggering 20-fold increase in funding for “consciousness warfare” activities compared to previous years.
This massive increase is aimed at reshaping international opinion through aggressive propaganda campaigns targeting American college campuses, social media platforms, and the foreign press. The effort will be coordinated with American Jewish organizations and the Diaspora Affairs Ministry.
See below for a prime example of the type of Hasbara this funding will be directed towards. The video, initially shared by COGAT, Israeli government’s body for coordinating aid into Gaza, and amplified by prominent ‘Hasbarist,’ Hen Mazzig, claims to show close-up footage of “Hamas terrorists” in civilian clothing planting explosives to destroy a hospital in northern Gaza.
This release coincides with global sentiment turning against Israel for burning down Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, abducting its director, and sending him to one of its notorious prisons to be tortured.
Over the past three months, Drop Site News has extensively documented Israel’s relentless assaults on the remaining hospitals in the north of the territory, part of a broader campaign to deprive Palestinians of healthcare while indiscriminately bombing civilians in a push to forcibly expel them from their homes and ethnically cleanse the region.
It should come as little surprise then that Avi Cohen-Scali, Director General of Israel’s Ministry of Diaspora and Combating Antisemitism, said a decade of multimillion-dollar hasbara campaigns against “delegitimization” have yielded “nearly zero results.”
“This activity has failed by every conceivable parameter,” he said. ⬇️
🚨Breaking: The Israeli military has surrounded Kamal Adwan Hospital and ordered everyone inside to gather in the outdoor square
The Ministry of Health has lost communication with the hospital. It reports the Israeli army sent a message to Dr. Hussam Abu Safiyeh, the hospital director, instructing him to bring patients and carers to the courtyard within 15 minutes, and told him that the army would storm the hospital after that.
Received 07:23 Gaza Time.
“Guys, we are inside the hospital. We have been asked to go down into the [hospital] courtyard.
We wish everyone safety, and if we are fated to, we will return to you and speak to you in better times.
And forgive us for our shortcomings.
Your brother, nurse Waleed Al Buddi, Kamal Adwan Hospital”

A report warning that famine is unfolding in northern Gaza, issued by the Famine Early Warning System Network (Fews), a US-funded organization, has been withdrawn after the US government intervened and demanded its retraction.
(Key details in thread ⬇️)
Video: Dr. Neve Gordon, Israeli professor of international law and human rights at Queen Mary University of London, interviewed by Al Jazeera. December 26, 2024.
2/5 ➤ The FEWS NET report dated December 23 stated that Israel has maintained a “near-total blockade of humanitarian and commercial food supplies to besieged areas” of northern Gaza for nearly 80 days including Jabalia, Beit Lahiya and Beit Hanoun, where rights groups have estimated thousands of Palestinians are trapped.
➤ “Based on the collapse of the food system and worsening access to water, sanitation, and health services in these areas … it is highly likely that the food consumption and acute malnutrition thresholds for Famine (IPC Phase 5) have now been surpassed in North Gaza Governorate.”
➤ It also warned that, unless Israel changes its policy, up to 15 people could die daily from starvation and related causes in north Gaza between January and March.
3/5 ➤ US Ambassador to Israel, Jacob Lew, dismissed the report as “inaccurate and irresponsible,” suggesting that uncertainty over how many of the 65,000-75,000 people under blockade in northern Gaza had recently fled south from their homes (been forcibly removed/ethnically cleansed) undermines its findings.
However, FEWS maintained that its famine assessment stands, even if as few as 10,000 people remain.
1/ Two days ago a video appeared on social media suggesting Hamas and PIJ-affiliated armed resistance groups were “threatening the Palestinian Authority with suicide bombings inside the Jenin refugee camp,” in the north of the illegally occupied West Bank.
2/ Hamas and PIJ denied any connections to the video.
The Jenin battalion (armed resistance group) said in a video: “We salute all the factions that are resisting the occupation in Jenin camp. We in the battalion do not have any suicide bombers inside the camp, but we do have a large number of fighters carrying rifles spread throughout the camp.”
3/ It was suggested by some that the videos were posted directly to Hamas and PIJ Telegram channels.
