Finnish navy is quite unknown even to many Finns.

However, for its size, it is very capable of its intended uses.

In the near future, however, the capability of Finnish Navy will increase considerably. 🧵 Image
Finnish Navy has 246 ships in one Naval fleet: the Coastal Fleet.

Its core is made up of missile boats and mine layers.

Finnish Navy is specialized in coastal combat in the Finnish archipelago, so Finland has a selection of fast crew transport ships.
Hamina class is a class of ships formed by the fourth generation of Finnish missile boats.

Missile boats are 51 meters long. They use stealth technology in their design & have a small draft (1,7 meters) that enables movement in shallow archipelago, using cover of the islands. Image
Hamina class ship can simultaneously monitor the airspace up to about 200 kilometers, fire anti-aircraft missiles to more than 14 kilometers and use its main weapon, 4 Swedish-made RBS15 Mk3 anti-sea missileanti-sea missiles, to more than 100 kilometers. Image
Rauma class missile boats are used
for the protection of maritime traffic and surface protection.

Vessels are well suited for air and surface surveillance as well as underwater and electronic surveillance.

These ships are specialized in anti-submarine warfare. Image
Power transmission of the ships is implemented with water jet propulsion, thanks to which the ships' maneuverability is good and they are able to operate in very shallow waters like Hamina class.
Ship's main weapon is six Swedish-made anti-ship missiles.

Ship has a 40 mm anti-aircraft cannon and two anti-aircraft machine guns as self-defense weapons.

For the search for submarines, the ship is equipped with anti-submarine weapons are depth charges launchers. Image
Finland has 2 Hämeenmaa-class coastal minelayers.

These ships have a steel hull and aluminum alloy superstructure. Class has an ice operating classification of ICE-1A and can operate year-round in ice up to 40 cm thick. Image
Main purpose of these ships is mining and clearing mines.

However, the platform can also be used for other purposes such as transport and escort duties.
Navy also has smaller Pansio-class minelayers, also known as mine ferries.

In addition to laying mines, vessels can also be used for transport or to supply the Naval forts. These vessels can carry a 100-ton load. Image
Finnish Navy has three classes of minesweepers in use:

There are three ships of the largest Katanpää class minesweepers. There are a total of 10 smaller Kuha-class and Kiiski-class ships. Image
One of the strengths of the Finnish Navy is the fast troop transfer capability in its archipelago.

Finland has a wide selection of landing craft which consists of four classes: Largest Jehu-class, Jurmo-class, Uisko-class and G-class. Image
In addition to the classes mentioned above, Finland has transport ships, command ships and ships specialized for different tasks.

In the near future, the strike capability of the Finnish navy will increase with upgrades and a completely new ship class.
Navy's most important ship fleet will be in 2025
after to consist of new Pohjanmaa-class corvettes, overhauled Hamina-class missile boats, overhauled Pansio-class minesweepers and Katanpää-class minesweepers.
Pohjanmaa-class corvettes to be acquired with "Fleet 2020" form the future of the Defence Forces strategic maritime performance. Image
Multi-role Corvettes will bring many new capabilities:

Ability to use of fire against ground targets, enhanced generation of real-time situation picture, more extensive cooperation with the Defense Forces' other units and more efficient capability engaging sub-surface targets. Image
With a length of 117 metres (m), width of 16m and a draught of 5m, Pohjanmaa-class corvette will be able to carry 70 crewmembers.

The vessel can also reach a speed of 25 knots (48km/h). Image
Armament and features of the corvette are cutting edge: Image
By joining NATO, Finland also has responsibilities for the defense of its allies.

Due to new needs, the Finnish Navy is facing these new challenges and changes.

In the future, together with its allies, Finland will therefore also challenge Russia in the Baltic Sea. Image
Sorry for the typos in some of the tweets in this thread, wrote this for a long time and should have read it trough one more time before posting.

Hopefully its not too painful to read, Im not buying premium because of that :D
Many seem confused by the overall number, Finlands little under 200 landing craft vessels are included into this number.

Finnish authorities struggled against time when they took over the Eagle S ship belonging to the Russian shadow fleet.

If the ship hadn't been moved off its course, it would have cut also another electricity cable between Finland and Estonia, Estlink 1, within half an hour. Image
Within an hour, ship would have reached the Balticconnector gas pipeline and been able to damage it.

Gas pipeline runs between Finland and Estonia and it transfers 7.2 million cubic meters of gas per day through it.

Mainila shots were not the only povocation preceding the Winter War.

Pummanki's provocation has been compared to Mainila shots.

On 28.11.1939, 2 days after the Mainila shots, 50 russians crossed the border under cover of darkness in Pummanki, Finnish Petsamo. 🧵 Image
In the evening, a call was made from the Kohmelo-oja guard camp to the border guard lodge in the village of Pummanki.

In the middle of the call, Pummanki's guard chief Veikko Salkio said that Finns were being pointed at with rifles from the door before the call was interrupted. Image
Russian soldiers had broken into the guardhouse and taken 3 Finnish border guards prisoner at gunpoint.

On the same day, a Finnish patrol sent to help found only an empty guardhouse.

Traces showed that the Finns had been dragged over the border to the Soviet Union. Image
