The American migration to Xiaohongshu
(RedNote) may be the craziest accidental cultural exchange ever.
Hundreds of thousands of users landed in an app not localized or in their language.
One day in, and it’s already considered rude not to subtitle videos in the other language.
Trends I’ve noticed:
- Chinese users telling Americans how not to get banned (policies are much stricter)
- Americans admiring Chinese fashion and diets
- Huge volume of subtitled American TV shows as a way to learn English
- More educational / business content
This video encapsulates the general vibe 👇
“Ni hao, my name is Ryan….I am a refugee from TikTok”

We're moving from the innovator -> early adopter part of the curve, with new startups sprouting up weekly to serve different verticals.
What @illscience and I are seeing @a16z, and why we're excited 👇
Not every business is ready for today's voice agents.
The early adopters tend to have a few things in common:
They heavily rely on calls to drive new business. These calls have a defined task or structure, and the stakes are (relatively) low - they're not life-or-death.
No one wants to send a prospective customer to voicemail.
Today's voice agents are great for after hours and overflow calls - and some outperform call centers. As they improve, they'll rival onshore employees, at much lower cost.
1) Understand what you said (speech-to-text) 2) Formulate a response (LLM) 3) Verbalize the response (text-to-speech) 4) Deliver the response to you (streaming, telephony)
