50 years ago on this day, amidst unexpected challenges, Keith Jarrett performed what would become a jazz masterpiece...

But what made this album so legendary?

Here's the story behind "The Köln Concert"

A thread🧵 Image
January 24, 1975, was set to be a night of magic for 1,300 attendees. However, the event almost didn't happen due to a series of unfortunate events starting with the wrong piano being provided. Image
Vera Brandes, a young German student and jazz enthusiast, had organized the concert. She had specifically requested a Bösendorfer 290 Imperial grand piano, but what arrived was a much smaller, out-of-tune baby grand used for opera rehearsals. Image

Jarrett, known for his perfectionism and perfect pitch, was on the brink of canceling the concert. He was also physically compromised by severe back pain and exhaustion from a long drive from Zurich. Image
Despite these challenges, Vera managed to convince Jarrett to proceed. Technicians worked for hours to make the piano somewhat playable, though it was far from ideal. Image
With a back brace for support, Jarrett took the stage at 11:30 pm. His performance that night was not just a testament to his skill but also his resilience against adversity. Image
The concert began with a 26-minute improvisation, a piece that blends various musical influences from jazz to folk, capturing the audience and later, listeners worldwide, with its meditative and crystalline beauty. Image
The second piece, lasting 48 minutes, was even more dynamic, driven by Jarrett’s left-hand ostinatos which cleverly compensated for the piano’s deficiencies, showcasing his adaptability and genius. Image
The Köln Concert became the best-selling piano album ever, transcending the limitations of the instrument through Jarrett’s masterful improvisation, influencing countless musicians like Brad Mehldau. Image
Decades later, this album remains a landmark in Jarrett’s career and ECM's discography. The night that almost didn't happen became an ironic blessing, proving that sometimes, imperfections can lead to perfection. Image

61 years ago today, John Coltrane recorded his ultimate masterpiece "A Love Supreme"

Recorded in only one day (yes, you read that right), it intertwines his musical genius with his spiritual awakening…

But how did this album came into existence?

A thread🧵 Image
The album opens with a simple four-note bass line, evolving into a 33-minute journey of rich improvisation, symbolizing Coltrane's own path from struggle to enlightenment. Image
McCoy Tyner, the pianist, recalls the session with dimmed lights, mimicking the intimacy of a live club, where the quartet honed their unspoken musical dialogue. Image

89 years ago today, the legendary Robert Johnson held his first recording session…

... in the quaint setup of Room 414 at the Gunter Hotel in San Antonio, Texas, Johnson laid down tracks that would later define the blues genre...

A thread 🧵 Image
Johnson recorded a total of 59 performances across three days in November 1936 in San Antonio, and later in June 1937 in Dallas.

These sessions produced what we now cherish as the core of his musical legacy. Image
Out of these sessions, 25 songs were initially selected for release by Vocalion Records on 12-sided 78 rpm records from 1937 to 1939.

Over the years, 17 more tracks, including alternate takes, surfaced, enriching his catalog. Image

On this day in 1969, Miles Davis started recording "Bitches Brew"

This wasn't just an album; it was a revolution. Jazz went electric, and the world hasn't been the same since...

A thread🧵 Image
Miles brought together a stellar ensemble: Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul, Chick Corea, John McLaughlin, and more.

The sessions were loose, experimental, and raw—Miles gave minimal direction, letting the musicians’ creativity run wild. Image
The result? A double album that defied convention.

Tracks like "Pharaoh’s Dance" and "Bitches Brew" were sprawling, hypnotic, and unlike anything jazz fans had heard before.

It was bold, chaotic, and utterly mesmerizing Image

Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life isn’t just an album—it’s a miracle…

It’s the kind of project that defies logic, time, and human limitation…

Here’s why:

🧵 Image
Stevie almost quit music entirely before making it. He was seriously considering moving to Ghana and leaving the industry behind.
He survived a near-fatal car accident just two years before the album dropped. He was in a coma for 10 days.
