I’ve seen my share of anti-science activists.

But few are as dangerous as Vandana Shiva.

She brands herself as a "food sovereignty" advocate.

In reality? She’s an activist spreading misinformation about GMOs, pesticides, and modern agriculture.

Here’s the real story 🧵: 1/ Image
She’s an Indian activist who claims:

❌ GMOs are killing farmers.
❌ Big corporations control our food.
❌ Pesticides are poisoning the world.

It sounds noble - until you realize she ignores science, distorts facts, and blocks real solutions to hunger and poverty. 2/
Shiva has falsely claimed that GMOs caused farmer suicides in India.

Reality check:

• Farmer suicides existed long before GMOs.

• The real causes? Debt and lack of infrastructure.

• Indian farmers chose GMOs because they increased yields and cut pesticide use. 3/
Blaming GMOs doesn’t help farmers.
It distracts from real problems. 4/
Golden Rice: The life-saving crop Shiva opposes

Golden Rice is a GMO that fights vitamin A deficiency, which causes blindness and death in children.

Shiva calls it a “hoax”—despite scientific consensus that it’s safe and effective. 5/
She claims it’s a corporate plot, but here’s the truth: It’s a non-profit project to save lives.

Her activism = more blindness, more malnutrition, more suffering. 6/
The hypocrisy?

Shiva charges up to $100,000 per speech, while telling poor farmers to reject technology that could improve their lives.

She’s an elite activist who romanticizes “traditional farming”.

While ignoring the reality of hunger and hard labor. 7/
Science feeds people. Ideology doesn’t. 8/
The cost of her activism?

Millions of malnourished children because she opposes biofortified crops.

Higher pesticide use because she fights pest-resistant GMOs.

Slower agricultural progress because she pushes fear over facts. 9/
She says she fights for the poor.
But her policies keep them trapped in poverty. 10/
The takeaway?

Misinformation is deadly. Shiva’s activism hurts the very people she claims to protect.

Science, not ideology, will feed the world. GMOs, precision farming, and biotech are solutions, not threats. 11/
We must challenge anti-science narratives. The loudest voices aren’t always the most truthful.

Progress doesn’t come from fear-mongering and conspiracy theories - it comes from innovation and evidence. 12/

The loudest voices often know the least.

It’s called the Dunning-Kruger Effect - and once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

Here’s why it explains everything from anti-vaxxers to flat-earthers 🧵: 1/ Image
In 1999, psychologists David Dunning and Justin Kruger made a hilarious but disturbing discovery:

People who know the least often overestimate their competence—while true experts doubt themselves.

In short:
❌ Ignorance breeds confidence.
✅ Knowledge breeds humility.
2/
When people learn a little.
They feel like they know a lot.

🚀 Confidence skyrockets.
📉 Actual knowledge? Still low.

But as they learn more, they realize how much they don’t know—so their confidence drops.

I care about the environment.

Do you know one of the biggest obstacles to real progress?

Greenpeace.

What started as an activist group fighting pollution and whaling has turned into an anti-science, anti-innovation machine.

Here’s how Greenpeace lost its way 🧵: 1/12
Greenpeace was once a force for good.

In the 70s and 80s, they:

• Fought against nuclear weapons testing.
• Helped raise awareness about industrial pollution.
• Played a role in protecting whales and rainforests.

Greenpeace was fighting for real environmental issues. 2/12
Then came the shift: ideology over science.

Instead of supporting evidence-based solutions, Greenpeace began opposing anything new:

❌ GMOs – Even Golden Rice, a crop designed to prevent child blindness.

❌ Nuclear power – The best low-carbon energy source we have. 3/12

One of the biggest myths about "Organic" food is that it’s more nutritious than conventional food.

Here’s the truth: it’s not.

Let’s break down the science behind this common misconception 🧵: 1/11 Image
First, what does “organic” mean?

Organic food is grown without synthetic pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, or GMOs.

But what it doesn’t mean is “healthier.”

Nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants don’t depend on whether a crop is organic or not. 2/11 Image
What the science says:

• Decades of studies show no significant difference in nutrient levels between organic and conventional crops. 3/11

The GMO that could have saved millions of lives.
🌾Golden Rice.

It’s a genetically engineered crop designed to fight vitamin A deficiency.

A condition that blinds and kills millions every year.

Here’s the story of Golden Rice and why it matters🧵: Image
Let’s start with the problem:

Vitamin A deficiency affects:
• 190 million children worldwide.
• Over 500,000 children go blind every year.
• Half of them die within a year of losing their sight.

It’s preventable—but only if people have access to enough vitamin A. Image
The solution? Golden Rice.

In the 1990s, scientists Ingo Potrykus and Peter Beyer developed a breakthrough:

They inserted genes into rice, enabling it to produce beta-carotene, a precursor to vitamin A.

The result? Golden Rice.
A simple, scalable solution to save lives. Image

Europe has romanticized organic farming to the point of harm.

We promote it as the gold standard, but the truth is, organic farming is less efficient, more resource-intensive, and not as “green” as we think.

Here’s the story of Europe’s organic farming myth 🧵: 1/
Let’s start with the facts:

Organic farming avoids synthetic pesticides and fertilizers.

That sounds great, right?
But here’s what it really means:

• Lower yields per hectare.
• Higher prices for consumers.
• More land needed to produce the same amount of food.
2/
The brutal irony?

Organic farming is often worse for the environment.

To compensate for lower yields:

• More land is cleared.
• More water is used to grow crops.
• Pesticides are used and can still harm soil and biodiversity.

Europe made a colossal mistake:

They banned genetically modified organisms (GMOs) while the rest of the world embraced them.

Now we rely on imports, pay more for food, and miss out on sustainable agriculture.

Here’s the story of Europe’s GMO debacle 🧵: Image
First, let’s start with the facts:

Europe has some of the most advanced research in plant science and agriculture.

Yet, nearly all GMO cultivation is banned.

Why? Because of fear - not science. Image
The root of the fear:

In the 1990s, media and activists fueled public panic about “Frankenfoods.”

Despite overwhelming scientific consensus on GMO safety, Europe chose caution over innovation.

The result? Image
