LVMPD Sheriff Kevin McMahill spoke at a Hispanic in Politics event this morning on community fears on ICE immigration enforcement. Here's what he had to say 🧵
McMahill said previously the dept had a long standing policy on notifying ICE on undocumented immigrants arrested and charged at the time of their booking and release. More on that policy here:

This policy changed after the passage of the Lakan Riley Act, and expanded ICE notifications for undocumented immigrant arrested and charged with burglary, theft, larceny, petit larceny and/or assault of a law enforcement officer. Image
McMahill notes NVs congressional delegation including Ds voted for this. "I know that doesn't make certain people happy, but I don't make law folks," he said. "If you're not happy with the fact that those laws were passed, you've got a bone to pick, but it's not with me."
McMahill affirmed his officers are not out conducting ICE raids. He notes that the dept has never had more than 40% undocumented immigrants who metro notified ICE on picked up from its jails, and only 4 indivduals have been picked up since Jan. 31.
He said over 300 individuals have been picked up in ICE operations conducted in the community so far, including a Venezuelan gang member and individuals affiliated with MS-13.
McMahill said he doesn't know what he can do to reduce fear. He said he anticipate there will more ICE operations.
He also touched on a protest against Trump's immigration policies earlier this week that turned violent. McMahill said frozen water bottles, rocks and other objects were hurled at his officers.
"It was a violent, violent few hours," he said. reviewjournal.com/crime/east-las…
Previously, LVMPD had an agreement with ICE known as 287(g) which allow state and local agencies to act as immigration enforcement agents. thenevadaindependent.com/article/metro-…
During an interview after the event, McMahill said he has no plans for 287g but he said the challenges is can the federal govt pass a law that compels the dept adhere to 287?
CCSDPD were also featured in the event. Sgt. Ben Abarca reminds the public they can make anonymous tips via Safe Voice.
"If you are a victim of a crime, you have the absolute right to report that," he said.
Lt. Steve Hewitt said CCSDPD policy states CCSD department members will not participate in any law enforcement activities where the primary purpose is to enforce federal civil immigration laws.
"CCSD Police officers will not stop, detain or question a person based solely on the person's immigration status, period," Hewitt said.
