This morning, three of the Mountain Mules, who became famous for carrying supplies through the mountain passes of Western North Carolina to Hurricane Helene victims, have tragically passed away.
Rest in Peace: Vader, Amigo, and Kev 💔
According to news reports, a tree fell on the fence that was holding the mules. They escaped and were struck in the road.
Full statement is below:
We could not be more heartbroken over this incredible loss, and it is with great pain that we share it with you, as we know many of you have also fallen in love with these sweet animals.
We will forever honor them for their faithful, loyal, and honorable service to others as they were used in training of some of the finest military members our country has, and especially the countless hours of work they have done to help so many families affected by Hurricane Helene. Besides their service, they were more importantly a part of our family, and loved.
Please pray for us at Mountain Mule Packers and Mission Mules as we cope with this terrible loss while continuing to go forward in their honor. We know that God can comfort us and show us the way going forward.

🚨#BREAKING: In a SHOCKING admission, the NC State Treasurer's office has confirmed that out of the $100 MILLION set aside to support local Western North Carolina governments impacted by Hurricane Helene...
... a grand total of $0 has been given out to date
Read that again.
Well done to @WRAL for tracking this down.
This is insane.
@WRAL Honestly, @WRAL has been pretty incredible with their reporting.
They were the ones on an absolutely TEAR to find out what in the hell was taking so long for FEMA to deliver temporary homes and the EXACT timelines for those.
THERE ARE LINES 3 MILES LONG EXTENDING ALL THE WAY ONTO THE FREEWAY FOR PROPANE TO HEAT FAMILIES LIVING IN DONATED RV'S IN #WNC TODAY AND FEMA CLOSED ALL OF IT'S DISASTER RELIEF CENTERS UNTIL MONDAY?!!!!!!!!!!
WTF IS HAPPENING?!!!!!!!!
THANK YOU @HistoryBoutique FOR THIS VIDEO!
@HistoryBoutique For reference, @HistoryBoutique is my wife and is on the phone with tons of mothers in WNC every day working to get them warm places to sleep.
Her stories are insane and I recommend following her for that personal content, breaks my heart ❤️
CAN SOMEONE ANYWHERE IN THE NORTH CAROLINA GOVERNMENT THAT REPRESENTS THE PEOPLE PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD GET FEMA ON THE FUCKING PHONE AND EXTEND THESE HOTEL VOUCHERS?!!!!
WE ARE TALKING TO ELDERLY PEOPLE AND WOMEN WITH KIDS BEING KICKED OUT OF THEIR HOTELS, WTF IS HAPPENING
A lot of people are offering so much, thank you.
But there's NO WAY our little team of 5 people can coordinate 3,000+ people somewhere to stay.
We need FEMA to extend the vouchers. That is the ONLY thing we need right now.
Bang down the doors, make some noise.
Mom with 4 kids asking us for help. @TheShawnHendrix and Operation Shelter have just paid rent for her and her kids for a month.
I am incredibly worried that unless significant steps are taken soon, Asheville could become a ghost town - 🧵(a thread)
1) Recovery isn’t just about rebuilding homes and businesses—it’s about rebuilding trust in the city’s future. The community’s sense of safety has been shaken, deeply. Families are leaving or have already left, seeking stability that Asheville is struggling to provide. This is already apparent in many areas of the city.
2) The economic backbone of Asheville—small businesses, tourism, and local arts—has been completely devastated. Many businesses I have talked to can’t afford to rebuild or reopen. Asheville is probably best known for its vibrant artist culture and it risks losing what makes it unique, especially with visitors hesitant to return to a disaster-stricken area.
