“Saying that Russia’s invasions of Ukraine was unprovoked is very dangerous because it’s wrong”.
The Russians said: “Please don’t do that. Don’t bring your troops, your weapons, your missiles right up to our border. It’s not a good idea”.
Farmers are protesting across Europe. But why? What are the roots of these protests? And are they really all about opposing the EU’s “green” agenda?
A 🧵 about my latest report for @MCC_Brussels about the EU’s damaging approach to trade and agriculture. brussels.mcc.hu/publication/re…
Certainly, the spark for these protests has been endless and insane environmental regulations. But farmers have been struggling for years with rising costs, over-regulation and unfair competition. The latest wave of “green“ policies is simply pushing them to the brink.
The EU is an agricultural powerhouse. It creates an enormous output of agricultural products. It is self-sufficient in a large number of areas, with strong exports. And profits for many farmers are good. Yet this story masks a serious problem.
What the hell is going on in Germany? A 🧵 about the country’s descent into rampant authoritarianism, based on my latest article. unherd.com/2024/05/german…
Everyone agrees German democracy isn’t in good health. But who is to blame? The liberal-centrist consensus is that the country is facing an unprecedented threat from nefarious populist and far-right forces — most notably the AfD.
But one may very well argue that Germany is already displaying worrying signs of authoritarianism, at the hands of those very same liberal-centrist forces that claim to be defending democracy from the barbarians at the gate.
The pace and scale of the bombing campaign in Gaza is historically unprecedented. In less than seven weeks, Israel has destroyed a comparable percentage of buildings in northern Gaza (around 70%) as that caused by the years-long carpet-bombing of German cities during WW2.
At least 50,000 houses have been completely destroyed in Gaza. The number rises to between 82,600 and 105,300 if we count buildings where at least half the structure was damaged.
1/ When we talk of the Israeli-occupied territories, or of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict more in general, we tend to focus on the latter’s political, social and humanitarian dimensions. But there’s also an important economic dimension that is often ignored.
2/ Military occupations naturally stunt the development of the occupied territory. The Israeli occupation is no exception. The Palestinian economy has been heavily affected by the occupation: by the fragmentation of the Palestinian territory into two disjointed regions...
Henry Kissinger has died. Here’s everything you need to know about America’s most controversial and polarising statesman — ruthless imperialist and diplomatic genius at the same time.
1/ As National Security Advisor and Secretary of State from 1969 to 1977 under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, Kissinger played a pivotal role in marshalling the United States through one of the Cold War’s most violent and turbulent decades.
2/ What one chooses to emphasise about Kissinger’s political record depends on where one sits in the “Kissinger wars”. According to his detractors, Kissinger was above all an imperialist who pursued US global supremacy with unmatched ruthlessness and cynicism.
