In the case of Baby P, registrar Dr Ukoh examined the baby at 09:35. At 09:40 the baby collapsed. In these 5 minutes Dr Evans said his opinion was someone gave the baby “an extra dollop of air” to cause the collapse.
Testimony the doctors and nurses reveals that the room was fairly busy. Dr Ukoh and Nurse Booth absolutely present. Possibly Nurse Morgan and Dr B as well.
This room is just 4 meters by 3 (see photo). Myers, Lucy Letby’s barrister, in her defence said the medical evidence was “as absurd as it sounds” and that given the abundance of eyewitnesses she would have lacked opportunity.
Nurse Morgan in her testimony said she was in the room, she said Letby wasn’t there and that Letby arrived after the collapse.
Unlike Dr Evans who miraculously changes his mind as the evidence comes in, Letby accepts in cross examination that she was there.
Another instance of Letby being offered an alibi and choosing not to take it
“Scientist who is passionate about correcting misinformation” @DrSusanOliver1 has claimed the collapses always occurred after other nurses left the scene.
This has never had any foundation in fact.
@DrSusanOliver1 Other examples of this include Baby A with 4 adults in the room, one of whom testified the incubator was in her full field of view.
Or baby B, with a nurse standing next to Letby when they heard the alarm going off
I've shared some of the transcripts of Dr Evans' testimony to the court. I recommend reading especially the cross examination for Baby C. One of the more extraordinary moments in the trial.
For Baby's A and B, we have the admission from Dr Evans that he came up with murder theories to "give the police ideas". For Baby B the ideas he gave to the police were Potassium Chloride poisoning, smothering, dislodged cpap prongs, and air embolism.
For Baby C the whole cross exam is just insane. As a reminder all of his 9(!!) pretrial reports either said the baby died of natural causes, or built a murder accusation around an X-ray taken on the 12th.
On the stand he switched it to the 13th after finding out Letby wasn't there on the 12th.
