„Pootinʼs story about why Russia must invade Ukraine is based upon his misunderstanding of a Viking colonial trope that does not concern Kyiv and could not have concerned Moscow, which did not exist at the time.”

„Pootinʼs premise for invasion is that Ukraine does not exist. There is no state, no nation. Ukraine is just a misunderstanding that can be corrected by the violence and propaganda. Image
@TimothyDSnyder 2).
And so the country was to be occupied, the children were to be reeducated, and everyone with any sort of political involvement was to be murdered.

The claim that somehow Russia had to invade Ukraine because of @NATO also comes down to the notion that Ukraine does not exist.
@TimothyDSnyder @NATO 3).
The story starts from the premise that only NATO has agency, that only NATO can act. Russia is therefore blameless in whatever it does, and Ukraine is simply a pawn. In this telling, the problem is that NATO was going to endlessly »enlarge« or »expand«.

Vladimir Vladimirovich Pootin „can’t win his war against Ukraine unless he persuades its allies to betray it.
@TimothyDSnyder 2).
@realDonaldTrump is genuinely bored of the war. He doesn’t understand it. He doesn’t know why it started. He doesn’t know how to stop it. He wants to change the channel and watch something else.
@TimothyDSnyder @realDonaldTrump 3).
Also, he has no cards: That probably reflects Trump’s true belief as well. For @realDonaldTrump, the only real cards are big money and hard power. Players, in his world, are people whom no court can block, no journalist can question, no legislator can oppose.

@mashagessen [1] [2]: „Pootin has been saying for years, in many different ways, that what he really wants – and feels he deserves – is to return to 1945, when the leaders of the U.S.S.R., the U.S. and Britain sat down in Yalta and carved up Europe.
@TimothyDSnyder @mashagessen 2).
This idea is fundamental to Pootin’s understanding of the world as it should be. He feels that Russia was cheated out of what it had won, fair and square, both in terms of land and in terms of influence.
@TimothyDSnyder @mashagessen 3).
The war he unleashed in Ukraine was – and he made this explicit – had as its goal the recapture of power and land in accordance with this vision.

„Canadian officials have said that the moment they realized @realDonaldTrump was serious about annexation was when he began to raise the history of U.S.-Canadian border arrangements, specifically the 1908 treaty that fixed parts of the border.
2).
The officials havenʼt revealed exactly what @realDonaldTrump said about the treaty.

Pootin has questioned the legitimacy of historic agreements over the border between Russia and Ukraine, particularly Nikita Khrushchevʼs decision in 1954 to give Crimea to the Ukrainian SSR.
@realDonaldTrump 3).
– »Ukraine is an artificial state« – Pootin told @TuckerCarlson's in an interview in Feb. 2024.

The U.S.-Canada border is an »artificially drawn line« – @realDonaldTrump said in a Jan. 7 news conference.”

Xi and Pootin have had a close relationship, which is also reflected in the countries’ ties. China has become a major customer for Russian oil and gas and a source of key technologies following sweeping Western sanctions on Moscow.”
