Good morning from Ukraine. I live in Kyiv and travel the country often and spend most of my time engaging Ukrainians and I am also learning Ukrainian langauge and pay attention to Ukrainian social media and news sites to practice my language skills.

Here's what I can tell you: Most Ukrainians, even those who do not like him and want him gone, are standing in support of him. Let me show you an example.

Thread
1. Yanina Sokolova, a popular political commentator with more than 1 million followers on YouTube, is very critical of Zelenskyy. But if you read the comments on her YouTube channel under videos of her reporting of the White House meeting, you will see that most of her followers are supporting Zelenskyy.

2. Across social media, Ukrainians are in utter shock at how Trump treated Zelenskyy and are convinced that he is in bed with Putin.

People in Ukraine have long been very critical of Zelenskyy and his opposition are lining up to campaign against him. This is true. But they all support his leadership when it comes to standing up against Putin. And they are proud of him for standing up against Trump. No one faults Zelenskyy for how he behaved yesterday.

If anyone can tell me otherwise, please refer me to a reliable Ukrainian source that faults Zelenskyy for how the presser went.
3. For the people who say Zelenskyy scuttled a shot a peace, here is what I say to you: have you been watching Russian media and listening to Putin's own words? Putin says Ukraine does not exist as a nation and all of its state media push the narrative that the post-USSR empire cannot be complete with Ukraine.

Putin does not want to co-exist with Ukraine.
4. So where does that leave us?

Can Europe, even with its best efforts replace U.S. military support? No. Not at *this* point. But here is the reality: Ukraine has no choice but to do more with much less. Otherwise their country will not exist if they stop fighting.

Can Ukraine keep up with Russia's attrition rates of battlefield deaths? No. But Ukraine has no choice. If they stop fighting, Russia will regroup, make up an excuse to justify another invasion and swallow up more land.
5. I think people are are trying to trick themselves into thinking there is some altruistic solution Russia is seeking to feel secure. Russia is already secure. It wants Ukraine. Nothing but a military solution will stop Russia. If NATO was the main fear Russia had, why did they not attack NATO (which is not out of the question).

The main issue is this: can you accept that?
6. In closing, Zelenskyy was set up. There was no good faith effort to support Ukraine or come to a peace agreement because Trump does not care about Ukrainians sovereignty. He care about "making a deal." Any deal he can sell to Americans that he brought peace--even if it doesn't do anything substantial.

He trusts Putin more than NATO and Zelenskyy. Zelenskyy was going to leave empty-handed, either way.
7. The mineral deal that Trump proposed (and it was an exploitive agreement that Ukraine initially and rightfully rejected) was more of memorandum than an assured contract. Basically, the deal, as it stood before the meeting, was a promissory note that was supposed to become something more substantial.

If Trump wanted it signed, all he had to do was behave like an adult. He did not. He wanted a spectable. He wanted Zelenskyy to beg and get on his knees. Anything other than him kissing Trump's feet would not have been satisfactory.
8. There are too many people eager for a peace deal for the sake of a peace deal instead of making hard choices that will avoid a wider war. Many people want Ukraine to accept being a vassal state of Russia.

If you believe Russia is a victim in anyway, there is nothing that can be done to change your mind.
9. Even if a ceasefire is established, Russia will attack again and cause an even bigger refugee crisis into Europe and destabilization of Ukraine for the rest of NATO than in 2022.

Europe is realizing that Trump is breaking from NATO and must create its own security.
10. This is an opportunity for Europe to meet its potential and create an security apparatus independent of the U.S. This will take years, but it is possible.

The biggest takeaway is that the U.S. is breaking from NATO (potentially, this could be the beginning of a NATO Brexit) and Ukraine is on its own and must brace for even rougher times. Otherwise, Ukraine will cease to exist as a state and Europe will be next. END

Greetings from Akhaltsixe, one of the more conservative parts of the country where Georgia Dream arguably has the tightest grip. Sorry for the lack of social media posts, but I've been reporting nonstop for the past week.

Here are my thoughts about the upcoming elections, after being here on the ground and talking to people for a week. (1)
First off, talking to people OUTSIDE OF TBILISI is vastly different than talking to folks in the regions. Here in the regions, people say GD controls so many aspects of their lives. For example, people who work in government jobs are pressured to support the party or face termination. I get that a lot. (2)
Most people in this region, I am told, do not support the GD government because they are pressured to follow the party line or risk losing their jobs. “We are not asked anything. We are TOLD what to do or will lose our jobs—or worse.”

This person said they want to vote for a different party but fears, somehow, the party is tracking their ballot. This sounds paranoid but this fear is very much real. (3)

I have an announcement:

With mainstream media dropping the ball on Gaza coverage and foreign affairs in general, I have a great foreign affairs newsletter called Black Diplomats that I’m asking you all to support. I’m providing original reporting and analysis from a Black perspective. Most importantly, I'm building a global community. Let me explain.

Newsletter  link: BlackDiplomats.newsImage
Most of you started following me for my work in Ukraine. I still live and report from there. But I want to expand my coverage to report on other underreported peoples of the world with an unapologetic Black voice. Palestinians in Gaza, people in Sudan and elsewhere need my compassionate reporting as well.

My newsletter will provide you access to them.

Please sign up to help me do just that: BlackDiplomats.news
I'm concerned that this 2024 election cycle won't have a prominent media space we can count on for regular foreign affairs news that challenges power and amplifies voices of peoples most impacted by Western hegemony.

That the big media outlets didn't livestream the hearing in which South Africa presented its genocide case against Israel should show you how one-sided their coverage is. I want to fill in that void.

I see a lot of Black folks are offended by activists interrupting Biden’s speech at Mother Emanuel AME Church with calls for a ceasefire in Gaza.

My opinion: it was the perfect place, albeit a very complicated one. Let me explain.
First, you have to understand the genesis of why Biden picked Mother Emanuel, the location where white supremacist Dylann Roof killed 9 Black people dead and injured one.

It was at the time the deadliest mass shooting at a place of worship in U.S. history and is the deadliest mass shooting in South Carolina history.
I'm sure Biden picked this location, in part, because of the urgency of challenging Trump's white supremacist campaign has never been more important. Trump can easily become president and racism will become part of his domestic and foreign policy. Black people won him South Carolina in the 2020 primary and Black people will help him win in 2024.

We are his most important base and he is, honestly, the wall between Black folks and the Trumpian white supremacy that motivates the Dylann Roof's of the world to murder us.

It is a very appropriate campaign stop.

As a Ukraine supporter, I'm happy Steve Scalise will be the GOP nominee for House Speaker because he has great politics.

As a Black man, I cannot be happy that a white nationalist who calls himself "David Duke without the baggage" will become one of the most important politicians in my country.

I'm sharing this with you to show what it means to advocate for Ukraine, but know that I have to accept that an extreme racist that rightly advocates for a foreign land undermines everything that empowers me be a full citizen of my country.

Such is the duality of being a Black/POC foreign policy professional.

Steve Scalise, if he is consistent with his voting record, will back Ukraine aid--and he should.

But this is the same man who has spoken out against granting Washington DC statehood, using racist talking points.

nymag.com/intelligencer/…
Steve Scalise spoke at a white nationalist convention of the European-American Unity and Rights Organization, which is full of racists and nazis.

As a Ukraine advocate, he is good for Ukraine.

As a Black man, I know Scalise hates me.

I never thought I'd be engaging a CODEPINK tweet about Ukraine, but I can't help it. So much of what these people say is so factually inaccurate or lacking any regional expertise that I can no longer help but respond.

Let's unpack this tweet.

🧵
1. Do you all notice that @codepink rarely, if ever, platforms UKRAINIANS when they talk about Ukraine? They claim to care about peace but never share the stage with Ukrainians to achieve that goal. And I also notice that they never come here.

I wonder why?
@codepink 2. Also, @codepink never talks about what Russia can do to bring peace. (which is get the fuck out of Ukraine) They never center Ukrainians who are experiencing genocide. They always center themselves.

I wonder why?

Morning, Tymofiy. As a Black American reporter who has covered uprisings (“riots”) in the US and lives in Ukraine covering the war, I think I can help. We're supposed to meet in person (hope you can make time this week), but your tweet requires a thoughtful response, my friend🧵
My response is less about you directly and more about the huge disconnect between Ukrainians who insist that we understand Russian colonialism yet exercise little intellectual curiosity about white supremacy against POC globally.
I say this as someone who is a cultural ambassador and has facilitated cross cultural sessions between Ukrainian orgs and POC groups for the purposes of coalition building. I've experience covering “riots” and working in Ukraine (I’m here now) with Ukrainians.
