1/ Clashes between Druze & HTS in Damascus. Druze refusing to hand over their areas to HTS. And HTS reluctant to give in to Druze, fearing other minorities might follow. And Israel now threatening to invade and "help" the Druze. Here a thread on chaos in Syria's south:
2/ The situation in Syria's south is complicated. So, let's start with the most recent developments: The fighting in Damascus suburb Jaramana between armed Druze groups and HTS. Jaramana is here on the map: Image
3/ Couple of days ago, an armed member of the new Syrian security forces was killed in Jaramana. Not exactly clear what happened. But the story goes that after he shot in the air, Druze gunmen in Jaramana responded to this. A fire fight erupted & the Syrian fighter was killed.
4/ On Saturday, the new Syrian gov (basically HTS) sent Sunni fighters to Jaramana. In clashes with Druze gunmen, 1 Druze was killed and 9 wounded. Mind you, this is all inside Damascus. Jaramana is very strategically located between the city center and Damascus int airport.
5/ In the meantime, 100 kilometers south of Jaramana, fighters in the Druze stronghold of Suwayda, also rushed to Jaramana to help their Druze brothers in Damascus. Image
6/ To make matters even more complicated, Israeli media reported that Israeli PM instructed the IDF to prepare to defend Jaramana. "We will not allow the extremist Islamic regime in Syria to harm the Druze." Israeli social media also pushed this map showing Israeli intentions: Image
7/ It is quite surprising that Israel threatened to send troops into Damascus. At the other hand, since the fall of Assad, Israel already advanced outside the occupied Golan. Israeli troops are now only 60 kms away from Damascus. If unopposed; that's only a one-hour drive. Image
8/ Israel's threat to intervene in southern Syria isn't new. Recently Israeli airstrikes targeted southern Syria. And last Sunday Netanyahu said Israel won't allow HTS or the new Syrian army "to enter the area south of Damascus."
9/ Netanyahu said: "We demand the complete demilitarization of southern Syria in the provinces of Quneitra, Deraa and Suweida from the forces of the new regime. Likewise, we will not tolerate any threat to the Druze community in southern Syria." msn.com/en-us/politics…
10/ Israel is clearly using existing tension between the Syrian Druze and the new Islamist HTS rulers to its own advantage. For Israel, "helping Syria's Druze" would coincide with the creation of a buffer zone inside Syria, safeguarding Israel's northeast.
11/ There are indeed traditionally (historical) problems between the authorities in Damascus and the Druze. Don't forget that Syria's Druze had their own state in the French mandate of Syria between 1921 and 1936. Image
12/ Also, during the recent civil war, Druze areas in Syria largely tried to stay out of the war. The area of Suwayda (in the south) was for many years more or less a neutral area, avoiding taking full side of either the governmemt or the opposition.
13/ However, a couple of incidents during the Syrian revolution that turned to a civil war between Jabhat al Nusra (former Al Qaeda, now HTS) and the Druze community, very much created distrust between the Druze and the jihadists.
14/ For instance, Jabhat al Nusra in June 2015 committed a massacre in the Druze village of Qalb Lozeh in Idlib. As Nusrah fighters tried to confiscate the houses of Druze, they killed 20 villagers.
15/ Also, Druze in jihadist areas often were forced to convert. Even back in 2012, there were already fights between Islamists and Druze in Jaramana. And also in 2012 Nusra kidnapped senior Druze dignitary Jamal Ezzeddine and sixteen of his men. Ezzedine was later killed.
16/ The worst incident for the Druze took place on 25 July 2018 when members of ISIS attacked the Druze stronghold of Suwayda and randomly killed 200 citizens. This attack was by far the most bloody attack on the Druze in living memory.
17/ So due to all the past bloodshed, there is a lot of distrust between many Druze and the new HTS rulers. For instance, until now the authorities in the Druze city of Suwayda have not allowed HTS fighters to enter the area.
18/ All in all, the distrust between the Druze and Syria's new Islamist rulers has now created this almost surreal situation whereby Israel is suddenly positioning itself as the savior of Syria's Druze.
19/ Very awkward for the Druze of course. Yes, the Druze are worried to be ruled by HTS but Israel's support is creating more problems for them with many Sunnis who now claim that the Druze want to break up Syria.
20/ It is for me impossible to know the percentage of Druze who would support this kind of Israeli "protection". But it clearly has given a new and dangerous element to this already complicated and sensitive situation.
21/ In the meantime, the latest from the ground is that the Druze in Jaramana (the Damascus suburb) and the government fighters have reached a temporary ceasefire and agreement.
22/ Acc to leaked information, agreement says:
Druze will hand over individuals involved in the killing of the security officer.
Druze will keep their checkpoints but will allow an HTS convoy to drive through Jaramana.
Return of the (pro Damascus) police to Jaramana.

1/ Another US drone strike in Syria killed today a member of Al Qaeda's affiliate Hurras al Din. This time Turkish national Muhammed Yusuf Ziya TALAY (aka Jafar al Turki). During the last 9 days, 3 US strikes in Idlib have killed 2 Libyans, 2 Syrians and 1 Turk. What’s going on? Image
2/ Turkish national Muhammed Yusuf Ziya TALAY was already listed as a counter sanctioned entity by the Turkish Ministry of Interior. According to information from that list, Talay was suspected of being a member of Al Qaeda. He was born in Ankara in 1986. Image
3/ Talay was killed in Idlib province in NW Syria, on the main road between the towns of Killi and Kaftin. Geolocator @ChrisOsieck already found the exact spot where the US drones strike took place:

1/ Worrying reports coming out of Syria of mass executions on Thursday in Alawite village of Fahel, near Homs. Acc to villagers, gunmen attacked Fahel and killed 58 men. In nearby village of Maryamin 2 men killed. I'm talking to people on the ground, this is what I learned:
2/ This is the region where it took place. Fahel, Maryamin and Shin. Northwest of Homs and southwest of Hama. Image

3/ Syrian authorities led by HTS declared days ago already that there was a security operation ongoing in rural areas west of Homs. The aim of these operations was, according to the new rulers, to flush out pro-Assad-regime elements.

1/ Confirmed: Syria's current interim Minister of Justice, Shadi Al-Wais, appears in 2 videos from 2015 in which he oversees the public executions of two women accused of prostitution.

The face of the lady is blurred when they shoot her in the head.
2/ The person speaking in the 1st video is the current minister of justice. The 1st video is cut before the actual execution takes place. The 2nd execution is shown but blurred. Minister stands in front of a wall saying: Jabhat al Nusra - Tanzeem al Qaeda fi bilad al Sham (Al-Qaeda group in the Levant).
3/ Standing on right in pic is Shadi Al-Waisi back in 2015 during the execution, insert shows recent picture of same person wearing a suit but now as minister of Justice. Thanks to @VeSyria for verifying this story. Image

1/ Hundreds protested in Damascus today for a secular state. One of the reasons for the protest was an interview an HTS official gave to a TV on women's rights. Below I’ll translate the interview. It gives clues about the ideas of the new leaders of Syria
2/ AlJadeed is a Lebanese tv channel. The official they interviewed is Obaida Arnaout. He is the spokesman for the HTS led interim government. Main topic of the interview is how the new interim government/HTS views the role of women in the new Syria.
3/ The first question they asked Arnaout was: What do you think about representation of women in ministries and in parliament?

Answer: "The matter is premature, it is left to the specialists from the legal and constitutional [fields], they will work on reviewing the structure of the state, the woman is an important element, and she is honored."

1/ As HTS (supported by Turkey) rapidly advances from the north towards Damascus, more moderate rebel groups (supported by Jordan, US) are already approaching Damascus suburbs from the south. The question is: Are both groups allies or rivals? Image
2/ HTS is still around Homs, 160 kms from Damascus. In the meantime, rebel groups from the south are already much closer to the capital. They are NOT HTS. They are a mix of rebels from Daraa, Suwayda & Tanf (where 200 US ground troops are stationed).Image
3/ The rebel coalition in the south has published a statement yesterday saying they are heading to Damascus and are against terrorism and sectarianism. This of course is clearly meant to distance themselves from HTS, which has Al-Qaeda roots and is still on the US terror list.

1/ Developments in Syria going so fast that reports become obsolete moments later.

I've reported from inside Syria since 2011 and I live in the MidEast. So, let me explain in this thread what the implications could be for Syria and wider region in case the Syrian regime falls:
2/ First, let me explain which units are participating in this offensive on the side of anti-Assad forces. Most belong to HTS. which split from Al-Qaeda in 2016. However, since 2018 HTS is designated a foreign terrorist group by the US State Department.
3/ HTS is active around Aleppo and Hama. The commander of HTS is Abu Muhammad al-Jolani. Earlier he headed Nusra Front (Al Qaeda in Syria). After HTS split from AlQaeda, he claims to have distanced himself from AQ. There is still a $10 million bounty on his head by the U.S.
