Keith Kellogg at @CFR_org this morning suggests that the US is engaged in "strategic overreach" in Ukraine, citing Paul Kennedy's work on "imperial overstretch" that can potentially lead to the fall of a Great Power. Image
Kellogg says he had "ringside seat" for Zelenskyy Trump meeting: "What happened was two nation state leaders coming into a meeting with objectives that was clearly not in alignment with one another, and there was a disconnect publicly between the goals of the two administrations"
Kellogg: Trump recognizes that US needs to "reset relations with Russia" in order to secure US national security. "The continued isolation and lack of engagement with the Russians as the war in Ukraine continues is no longer a viable strategy."
In conversation with @margbrennan, Trump envoy Keith Kellogg says of US intelligence cutoff: "Very candidly, they brought it on themselves"
Audible gasp in the room at @CFR_org after Kellogg said of intelligence cutoff: the Ukrainians "brought it on themselves"
Interesting that Kellogg has twice listed the advisors surrounding Trump as Rubio, Waltz, Bessent, Lutnick but omits Putin envoy Steve Witkoff. Finally when brought up by @margbrennan, he notes that at State: "Our offices are on the 7th floor, [Witkoff's] are on the 5th floor."
Kellogg on effect of US military aid and intelligence cutoff to Ukraine: "It's like hitting a mule in the face with a two by four, you know. You got their attention."
Kellogg on Ukraine cutoff: "It's not like they didn't know this was coming. They got a fair warning. I told them, and they were told last week as well." Kellogg now comparing speaking to Ukrainian leaders like speaking to his two granddaughters who call him "Pop pop".
Kellogg repeatedly describing Ukrainian and Russian demands as "term sheets." "Do we have a term sheet from the Russians broadly, and do we have a term sheet from Ukrainians? The answer is yes and no." Wants to understand the "kind of pressures we can apply."

I dug in to Musk's dismantling of USAid because it shows his playbook for capturing the whole federal government. What surprised me was his direct involvement in the operation. For example, he demanded suspension of 57 career officers by phone last Monday. theguardian.com/us-news/2025/f…
Musk called a senior USAid official on Thursday to demand that the "Doge kids" be given sensitive employee data. And again on Saturday, during a standoff with security, he was called and told them he was ready to involve the US marshals service. theguardian.com/us-news/2025/f…
Musk outranked the Trump admin's own political appointees. His young engineers who obscured their identities were given carte blanche in the building. “Who is in control of our government?” one person said. “[Doge] basically showed up and took over.” theguardian.com/us-news/2025/f…

They hid together from Russian bombs in a Mariupol basement. Then they saw their neighbors’ kids hugging a Russian soldier at Putin’s propaganda concert. “I don’t know what happened to Kostya’s family… they were good people. We shared food with them.” theguardian.com/world/2023/feb…
I spoke to two neighbors who recall Kostya’s family from the basement of a Mariupol district administration in mid-March, some of the worst days of the siege. Bombs were falling outside. Men would venture out for food or water together, stepping over bodies and puddles of blood.
Kostya’s family was not openly pro Russian before the war. They lost their home in the siege. And Igor’s dad helped save another building in the neighborhood during a fire due to Russian shelling. “My husband was running with Kostya’s dad to get water and food for us under fire.”

“What am I, some loser to run away from this? My fate is to be a soldier.” Soon he died in a Himars strike. I went to Samara to talk to dead soldiers’ families about the deep well of war support. “If society hadn’t exploded yet, why would this set it off?” theguardian.com/world/2023/feb…
One thing I kept hearing while reporting was “that’s what a military wife is supposed to do” or “that’s the life of a military family.” Including those whose husbands had had just been mobilized and died. There’s a strong effort to establish a code of silence around the war.
These “wives of heroes” photo exhibitions that show Russian women in their husbands’ military uniforms began in Samara as the idea of the wife of a top general. But they’re now appearing around the country. In a year when Russian losses in the war are estimated at 200,000.

Who came to Putin's fake meeting with soldier's moms?
- An ex-government official from Khakassia
- Mother of a Chechen police commander personally recognised by Kadyrov
- An ultra-conservative Russian poet who is "radically pro-government"

Olesya Shigina, an ultra-conservative poet, film-maker and activist, recently said: “At the front, no one is angry at the government … They have one goal there... to win." An acquaintance called her “radically pro-government”. “Ideologically, she holds the same views as Dugin,”
Zharadat Aguyeva of Chechnya has two sons, one is a commander in the Zapad-Akhmat battalion, the other is a local police chief. Ramzan Kadyrov personally thanked them on Telegram and suggested they were accompanying his teenage sons in Ukraine.

The Crimean Bridge has been hit, either by a missile or a sabotage attack. Strikes at the heart of Vladimir Putin’s prestige. He went to war to take Kyiv only to find that he can’t even protect Crimea. He’ll be looking for some way to respond. twitter.com/i/web/status/1…
Russian anti-terror committee says a truck exploded on the bridge, both destroying a section of the motorway and also igniting railway cars filled with fuel. Honestly raises a ton of questions, including how that attack could be timed so perfectly and could a single bomb do it?
There is now security footage that purports to show a truck exploding on the Crimean Bridge. If this is all true, it means this was a suicide attack.

“Don’t worry. Sobyanin will fix it.” How Russia’s technocrats and propagandists think they can salvage Putin’s mobilization by trashing the military and bringing in managers to paper over a simple problem: no one asked for a draft. theguardian.com/world/2022/oct…
In big cities, Russia’s government has sought to replace free and fair elections with technocratic solutions to the problems of daily life. Most people know they did not choose the mayor but feel it’s ok if life gets better. Russia is now trying the same trick with mobilization.
So how do you calm Russians about mobilization (without canceling it)? You send local managers to oversee the draft and start canceling call-ups. You build sleek new mobilization points with minimalist airspace aesthetics. You open a website called ‘we’re explaining dot com.’
