This post serves as a rapid-fire reference for developers trying to compare feature sets of different indexers.
Indexers are important because performant dapps need efficient ways of reading chain data and listening to relevant events.
There are a number of indexers for EVM data, and it can be confusing understanding the featuresets of different options. We have tried to map out the space here.
A Mental Model
At a high level, there are two major types of indexer services: 1. Providers of data for the most common use cases such as token balances or activities for a given address 2. Indexing frameworks that allow developers to build custom off-chain calculators
Data for common use cases
Access methods: API or streaming (i.e. rapid replication to your environment)
Data you'll typically see:
- raw data (blocks, transactions, logs, traces). For transactions and logs, they may be ABI-decoded
- token (native/ERC20/NFT) balances
- token (native/ERC20/NFT) transfers
- DEX trades
- market data
10 data indexers already support Monad Testnet including Allium, Codex, Dune Echo, Goldrush (by Covalent), Mobula, Pangea, Reservoir, thirdweb, Unmarshal, and Zerion.
Indexing frameworks
Smart contract indexers allow you to listen for specific events and compute additional metrics off-chain. You can think of them as extensions to a smart contract that do additional off-chain computation and maintain additional off-chain state.
Indexers vary by language, hosting support, and additional features like built-in alerting and visualization.
A matrix of features by provider is here: docs.monad.xyz/tooling-and-in…
8 smart contract indexers support Monad Testnet including DipDup, Envio, Ghost, Goldsky, Sentio, SQD, SubQuery, and The Graph.

In crypto, community is the X-factor. There are a few components of a community that I think are crucial towards putting any project in a position to succeed.
These aspects are: Culture, Interconnectedness and Loyalty.
On Culture:
While finance and money are an inherent part of the happenings of crypto, a community’s strength is measured by the wealth of personality, creativity, and talent. Anyone, regardless of their current wealth or level of CT fame, can have a massive impact on a community by being creative and thoughtful. And creativity itself takes many forms - from art and design, to writing, to coding, to just being weird and memorable. RayJ constructed deep lore. Lydicius became a notorious spammer. Purpleman became a plushie philanthropist. Happy wrote his candid thoughts. Skilly turned the discord purple. Hanriver created a distinctive style in Microsoft Paint.
On Interconnectedness:
The relationships between community members are the basis of a healthy and powerfully-positioned ecosystem. These relationships are more important than the relationships between a community member with any one team member. This creates a bottom-up approach that is more organic and sustainable for the long term.
On Loyalty:
The loyalty that one has to a community may be the defining characteristic of someone being a community member at all. These are people who are not only attached to the vision, but actively contribute towards advancing the project towards that end goal. These people will be there on good days and bad. These individuals are the heart and soul of your community.
Monad is fortunate to have a large group of people who are cultured, interconnected and loyal. These are the “Nads” as they call themselves.
As I reflect during the holiday season, I want to center in on one of these components that means the most to me: loyalty.
Loyalty is everything. While the Nads are loyal to Monad, I think it’s equally important that the team is loyal towards the community.
Let me take this opportunity to tell the Nads just how loyal I am to you. I work every single day for you. I fly around the world to meet as many of you as possible. I try to talk to as many of you online as I can. I wear the hats, I sing the karaoke, I eat the onions. I do all of this because I deeply appreciate each and every one of you. I have seen many of you grow tremendously, and I am so proud of what this community has evolved into. I am even more excited to see what is to come.
I will do everything in my power to make monad a success, but none of it matters without the Nads. Monad is nothing without YOU!
To express my loyalty, gratitude and appreciation for the Monad community, I want to list some of the Nads who make a real difference in the monad mission day in and day out...
(Let me apologize in advance as I will undoubtedly miss many loyal members.)

a hierarchy of metrics: 1. net profit (the E in P/E ratio) 2. gross profit (profit before OpEx aka salaries etc) 3. protocol revenue (portion that does or can accrue to tokenholders) net of incentives 4. revenue (protocol revenue + cost of revenue aka LP yield) 5. volume 6. TVL
here is how analysis on protocols can be improved:
A1. be aware that 6/5/4 are easily gamed, and when making comparisons across protocols, endeavor to measure real protocol revenue net of incentives (3)
this might require looking at an unincentivized period or segment
A1 (cont) gamed how?
TVL - gamed by leverage (recursive borrowing) and double-counting from composability - most famously by Dylan&Ian
volume - gamed by wash trading, but also by effectively-negative fees (LOOKS, DYDX, many new platforms)
Eth net supply growth does NOT mean the network's value accrual (i.e. fee burn minus outlays) is 'unprofitable' for tokenholders in aggregate
It just means it's 'unprofitable' (very slightly) for unstaked Eth holders
Quick thread to elaborate:
Fee burn (post EIP-1559) is a value accrual method. Supply goes down + marketcap flat -> price goes up
Inflation from staking would seem like the opposite effect, but it's mostly not: 2/6
Staking-based inflation results in value transfer from nonstakers to stakers. The extreme was OHM with 7000+% APY to stakers but the same principle applies to Eth
Inflation is a 'cost' to nonstakers but a source of income to stakers. To holders in aggregate it's *mostly* 0
3/6
