I voted against the horrible MAGA “continuing resolution” — a fake and partisan CR loaded up with executive power for Trump. I hated it. But respected colleagues voted otherwise, and not just to “cave in” versus “stand up.” 🧵
I did a lot research into how a shutdown might play out, and there was lots to fear; not least that the Trump/Musk/Vought axis of MAGA extremists would love a shutdown, and want a long one, and use it to cruel advantage. What was there to fear?
In shutdown, executive powers are at their apex, including power to close whole departments and agencies and divisions, “Reduction in Force” all their personnel, and make massive cuts of programs and firings of people they deem “non-essential.”
The horrible stuff they’re now doing illegally and sloppily with their DOGE Musk-rats, they could do in shutdown mode under a veneer of legality, directed by Trump’s “Project 2025” OMB, with added executive powers from declaring an “emergency.”
MAGA extremists and their spineless Congress would decide what agencies or parts of agencies to bring back out of shutdown, and when. Defense, Homeland Security and the VA (with parts they don’t like removed) would likely come first.
But when would they bring the Department of Education back out of shutdown, or the EPA? Ever? What courts would they keep open for “essential” judicial functions (with Roberts’ blessing)? The MAGA-ized Fifth Circuit? Trump’s MAGA district judges?
I was willing to walk into that valley of government death to bring the battle to a head, make a clear break between sides, and (I believe) help brightly spotlight for voters the evil at work. But it’s reasonable to reach the other conclusion, and good people did.
House Democrats had a clear path. First, stick together to challenge Republicans to unify their oddball majority, and when that happened, stick together for a protest vote once they could do nothing. They almost completely did, and good for them.
But Senate Democrats had to handle actual shutdown dynamite. It was a different set of choices for my Senate colleagues. Shutdown or no shutdown was in our hands. Good people had to make hard choices between horrible alternatives.
Democrats (and pundits) love a good family feud, but we’re in a battle for our democracy against dangerous forces, and every moment we spend quarreling amongst ourselves lets the other team score while we fight. It’s a luxury we cannot afford.
Here’s the leadership change we need: we need Leader Jeffries to be replaced by SPEAKER Jeffries, to check the Trump administration’s wanton destruction and end the madness. Any effort not targeted to that goal is a waste at best and a harm at worst.
Remember, MAGA Republicans set this up. THEY killed the sane third path — a clean 30-day CR leading to a bipartisan spending agreement (one ready to be concluded) — to jam Democrats between two terrible options, and set us against each other. It’s worked.
Everybody deserves to have their say, to vent their anger, and to demonstrate their passion. I’m pissed myself. But job one is to get back in the fight, back to the work of spotlighting the corruption, the chaos, and the looting of our country by creepy billionaires.

Here’s how I think the Social Security attack plan works: 🧵
One: Trump and his vassals tell lies that there’s no plan to cut Social Security.
Two: Trump and Musk lie loudly about imaginary Social Security “fraud” to lower public confidence in the program.

As we struggle with the Trumpian assault on America, there is a way home, and there is broad public agreement on its elements. Whatever the immediate issues and outrages, we must persistently and relentlessly pursue the pathway home.
1.   Get rid of dark money in politics. Getting this corrupting toxin out of our elections enjoys powerful public support all across the country; even slightly better in red-leaning districts. Yet most voters don’t know who opposes and who defends dark money.
2.   Spotlight the climate denial machine. The fossil fuel industry runs the biggest and most corrupting political influence and disinformation operation in U.S. history. Calling it out is important truth-telling as the economic dangers of climate change fall upon us.

This week’s 5-4 win for federal funding was less notable for the 5 than for the 4.

This was payment for contracts the government had agreed to where the work contracted for had been properly performed. How was that not 9-0?

🧵
The short answer is that it had the irresistible odor of MAGA, Musk and Trump. It was a Project 2025 thing, funded by the creepy far-right billionaires who also funded the capture of the Court; same network behind the justices’ Billionaire Gifts Program.
Imagine the counterfactual of a Democratic President withholding payment to a defense contractor for work properly performed under contract for the military. Do you believe the 4 would have faulted a federal judge for saying, “Pay what you agreed to”?

Many Democrats are asking what the path forward is, calling for a period of reflection. “Where did we go wrong? What is the way back?” Well, how about looking right in front of our own noses.
For years, creepy billionaires funded (and enjoyed) the destruction of America’s political money limits, and launched billions in corrupting dark money into American elections. Despite massive public reaction against that, Democrats basically let it happen.
(In the Senate, we managed two votes in 14 years on the DISCLOSE Act, despite 80/20 polling advantage and massive public response in state referenda. As a result, many voters don’t know Democrats are any better than Republicans on getting rid of dark money.)

After the Trump/Musk/Russia smash-and-grab through government agencies, we are going to need to rebuild. It’s not as hard as you may think.
1.   Get the dark money out of politics. There is way too much secret corruption from billionaires and giant corporate interests.
2.   De-corrupt the tax code, stop the free-loading, and settle our national finances. Billionaires and mega-corporations paying little or no tax is a disgrace.

This all began years ago, when a bunch of fossil fuel billionaires saw trouble ahead for their pollution and their pollute-for-free business model, so they began a covert operation to bring industry influence to bear on U.S. politics. Climate denial was born.
The science was clear. Even Exxon’s scientists knew. The predictions have proven deadly accurate. But when science encounters politics in Congress, politics wins, so fossil fuel went to work to corrupt Congress, deny the science, and mislead the public.
Knowing they had no credibility, they set up or took over a legion of front groups, to propagate their message from behind the cover of bland or familiar-sounding names. The front groups numbered in the dozens, like keys on a disinformation piano.
