Here is a true story about how the fake news operates 🧵

1/
The @WSJ reached out to us Friday with a series of vague allegations they claimed they needed VA’s help “fact checking” to make sure we “didn't see any errors” in their reporting. 2/
Despite repeated requests, reporter @lindsayaellis, Deputy Coverage Chief @janetadamy and Washington Coverage Chief @damianpaletta refused to provide VA the basic information required to look into their allegations. 3/
For instance, @WSJ alleges that veterans are “waiting longer to get treatment in North Texas.” They provided zero evidence of this claim other than hearsay. When we asked WSJ to name the specific VA facility & the specific wait-time data they were referencing so we could look into it, WSJ could not provide the info.
4/
Additionally, @WSJ alleges that “Fewer VA staff are handling veterans’ claims that will get them treatment for military-service injuries & mental health conditions.” Again, zero evidence of this claim other than hearsay, & when we asked WSJ for specifics, such as the job titles & locations affected by these alleged cuts, the WSJ could not provide it.
5/
Given the conduct of @lindsayaellis, @janetadamy and @damianpaletta, it seems clear the @WSJ is not interested in determining whether the info it prints is even true. This is the definition of fake news. Please hold your team to a higher standard, @emmatuckerWSJ!

Many people probably don’t know the extent to which some in Congress and the media collude to push false narratives that mislead the public. Here’s a blatant example featuring the far left @propublica media outlet. 🧵
Last Friday, ProPublica sent us a host of questions and allegations regarding @DeptVetAffairs facilities around the country and set an unreasonable deadline of early Monday morning. Why the rush? Apparently, they wanted to publish their story before my Tuesday testimony in front of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.
The story itself was a typical liberal-media hit piece that’s all too common nowadays. It seems as if the reporters decided what negative narrative they wanted to push, carefully cherry-picked their “reporting” to support that narrative, then ignored or minimized the facts we offered to defend VA.

The @nytimes’ liberal bias is common knowledge. But for anyone who needs more proof, just look at the publication’s coverage of @DeptVetAffairs under President Biden as opposed to now. Here’s what I mean: 🧵
Since I became VA secretary in February, the Times has done three full-blown hit pieces on us. None of the stories has gained any traction – probably because they’re essentially just a laundry list of union-driven grievances.
Still, the Times’ negative posture toward VA now is starkly different than during the Biden Administration. Back then, the paper seemed happy to essentially write through VA press releases (actual headline: “V.A. Recruits Millionth Veteran for Its Genetic Research Database”).

True stories about the fake news: @CNN edition. 🧵
Every few days, a guy named @BrianToddCNN reaches out to us, asking for the department’s response to whatever fake controversy VA’s critics are pushing. I’m not sure what his actual beat is, but his specialty seems to be regurgitating pre-packaged opposition research VA critics prepare for him. (2/7)
Late last week, Brian struck again, claiming to have a scoop about a proposal to “automate VA call centers.” In reality, no such plans exist. Brian’s scoop was based on false, deliberately leaked “information” from people who aren’t involved in our planning process. In other words, Brian was the target of a disinformation operation designed to generate fake news. (3/7)

Here’s why we’re making changes at @DeptVetAffairs : VA health care has been on the Government Accountability Office’s high-risk list since 2015. It is still on the list to this day. 1/🧵
We are trying to fix this.
According to GAO, the high-risk list highlights “programs and operations with serious vulnerabilities to waste, fraud, abuse, or mismanagement, or in need of transformation.” Specifically, GAO says VA faces “system-wide challenges in overseeing patient safety and access to care, hiring critical staff, and meeting future infrastructure needs.” 2/
We want to reform the department to fix these and other problems. We owe America’s Veterans – and the hundreds of thousands of excellent VA employees – solutions. 3/
