10 THINGS EVERY MAN SHOULD KNOW ABOUT TESTICULAR CANCER
Did you know testicular cancer is the most common cancer among young men aged 15-35?
This cancer is not limited to older age, yet many men are totally unaware of it’s existence or how to identify it.
Let’s talk about it👇🏼
IT IS RARE BUT REAL
Testicular cancer is cancer that starts in the testicles.
The testicles are 2 walnut shaped glands responsible for producing sperm and testosterone.
It accounts for only about 1% of cancers in men, however it is more common in younger men, and thus should be known about.
EARLY DETECTION IS KEY
Testicular cancer is one of the most treatable form of cancers, with the survival rate exceeding 95% if caught early.
What are the early signs of testicular cancer?
The most common sign is a painless lump in your testicle.
Others include;
- Swelling or fluid build up in your testicles
- Feeling of heaviness in your scrotum
- Pain in your scrotum
- Changes in testicle shape or firmness
- Dull ache in the groin
SELF EXAMS SAVE LIVES
Performing a monthly testicular exam is important for immediate identification of cancer.
How do you perform monthly examinations?
- Perform it after a warm shower because the heat relaxes the scrotum
- Stand in front of a mirror and check for visible swelling
- Gently roll them between your fingers to feel for lumps or hardness
- Look out for key warning signs
- Record any observations and speak to a doctor about it.
HOW DOES A NORMAL TESTICLE FEEL?
- Size and shape: Each testicle is about the size of a small egg, oval and smooth.
- Texture and firmness: Testicles are firm but not hard, the surface is smooth without irregularities.
- Position: One testicle(left) usually hangs lower than the other.
- They’re sensitive to touch, but not painful.
RISK FACTORS TO WATCH OUT FOR
You’re at higher risk of testicular cancer if;
- You were born with an undescended testicle
- You have a family history of testicular cancer
- You have HIV or some genetic disorders
- You’re white (Caucasian)
DIAGNOSIS IS STRAIGHT FORWARD
When cancer is suspected, doctors confirm it using tools like;
- Ultrasound: To see if the lump is solid or fluid filled
- Blood tests: To check for markers of tumor
- Imaging scans: To check if the cancer has spread to other organs.
TREATMENT IS HIGHLY EFFECTIVE
Testicular cancer is one of the most treatable forms of cancer.
Treatments include;
- Surgery: Removal of the affected testicle
- Radiation therapy
- Chemotherapy: For advanced or aggressive cancers.
Most men live long and healthy lives after treatment.
PREVENTION STRATEGIES
Although prevention is not always possible, some steps can be taken to reduce your risk of developing cancer.
- Perform regular self exams
- Understand your family history
- Protect your testicles during sports
- Exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet
- Treat undescended testicles early
- Stay informed
LIVING WITH ONE TESTICLE
Losing one testicle doesn’t mean losing your masculinity.
- The remaining testicle often produces enough sperm and testosterone
- If fertility is a concern, sperm can be put in a bank for future purposes
- Prosthetic testicles are available.
EMOTIONAL IMPACT
Testicular cancer can affect self esteem and mental health.
It’s important to have open conversations and join support groups to reduce stigma.
Also, seek therapy or counseling if diagnosis feels overwhelming.
Testicular cancer is rare but highly treatable if caught early.
Be proactive with self exams, know your risks and seek help if anything seems out of the ordinary.
Your health is worth it!
