These are the Lib Dem councillors. Some of them looked rather uncomfortable but there are rather loud bullying chaps who, sadly, seem to set the agenda.
Up first for the LDs was Fiona Bennett who seemed a little confused about which side she might land on. "Everyone experiences trauma differently and responds differently, and no one has the right to dictate what should or shouldn’t make another person feel safe."
Yes, Fiona, that is right. She then said we should "commit to listening to each other" listening which involved "both c*s and trans women?" So, once again women who don't identify as women are ignored even though they are far more vulnerable than the blokes.
"Women’s Aid is doing incredible work. Can we work with them? We’re not here to vilify Women’s Aid."
OK, so why do you propose writing a snotty letter to lecture them on "the importance of providing services to trans women and to ask how the organisation intends to do this"?
And if you had been paying attention, Cllr, you would have heard EXACTLY how they do that and why, and how, they operate single sex spaces.
This is Linda Rodgers speaking earlier. Did you nod off?
Ah, but the important people!
"And we also consider for a moment that trans women experience situations where they feel unsafe." Yes, lots of men feel unsafe at various times. Especially older men, disabled men, gay men, etc. Should they all be able to access all EWA services?
"As a friend of mine said to me last night, a trans woman, our voices are virtually non existent in the discourse." 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Oh wait, you're serious?
Were you at the Lib Dem conference today councillor? I wouldn't say there was a lack of transwomen's voices there. There's a video - watch it back if you don't believe me. I mean, some of it was bonkers but nice to see sane people as well! libdems.org.uk/conference/live
Fiona then does another wee pivot and begs everyone to stop fighting and listen to experts. And says council should support them. How about you support them by not dragging them to the chamber to beg? How about you support them by not entertaining any suggestion you know best?
But Fiona is practically Terfy besides her fellow councillor in Murrayfield/Corstorphine, Euan Davidson. Before we look at his contribution, we were sent a rather entertaining link to the local community page (it's publicly visible).
Euan was very cross that uppity women thought the potential defunding of EWA was a bit important. As he said "I'm going to be honest and don't see why it should have been prioritised". Yes, stop thinking this is an urgent matter! It was only his position on a trivial motion!
Having been told that he made a 'deplorable' contribution, he decides this means his constituent thinks supporting victims is deplorable. This man is a tit! We are chuckling that one woman has his measure and says she "did not consider it worthwhile contacting you."
Oh, this is Euan.
I'm not saying he's single minded, uncompromising, and a bit of a bigot about woman, but he did complain about "Terf land" getting Jane Austen on a £10 note.
There's reams of this stuff. He's so charming to women like @joannaccherry @JoanMcAlpine @holyroodmandy etc. He does appreciate Cllr Staniforth though! That's nice.
And he salivated at the thought of @GussieGrips getting her collar felt. If only she had been elected to council with him! Oh and FPFW are a "hate group" and he doesn't think women have the right to object to men in the female toilet.
He's lovely, isn't he?
OK, let's look at the "deplorable contribution".
Euan says all victims should have services. OK, but this is about a tiny number of men. There's been no push to discuss specialist services for gay men, for example.
Or, again, transmen.
This can create "genuine conflict".
Why? services by & for women are by & for women. If you think other services are needed, crack on.
But, you see "that conflict has meant that trans women and non binary people understandably feel that this is not the case for them."
Well Euan, NB women are fine. Just not beardy chaps with pronouns like your pal Alex.
It's funny how you always forget the female half of the group!
But he had an email! From a constituent! "convincing my trans child that they have a place in this city’s future can be really hard."
Ah yes, because when designing services for women fleeing a murderous partner with a small bag, two kids, & no money, the first thought is always "how will an indulged middle class child in Corstorphine feel if the abused women refuses to validate they/them?"
Anyway, Euan, I thought you said that dealing with emails on this wasn't really important?
Or did you mean dealing with *some* emails on the topic was a bit low priority?
"All we are asking in this composite amendment is that publicly funded services protect all women, c*s and trans."
Yes, see that, that, right there is the problem. They CAN'T serve women and some men and remain single sex.
He wants this to be the start of a "productive conversation with Women’s Aid and all other providers so that we can ensure that the great work they do is available to all victims."
Men, Euan, you want them to take men. Which defeats the ENTIRE fecking point!
So that was the LDs. Marginally less mad than the Greens but duplicitous & slippery. And weak. Because, we reckon, most of them don't believe a word of it.
And now, a palate cleanser from Council leader Jane Meagher of @EdinburghLabour who clearly and concisely explained why women need single sex services and trauma-informed care. Cllr Meagher was one of the women who set up EWA and she is something of a legend!
For completeness, this is Cllr Watt of Labour who called the Green motion "irresponsible".
As the motion was not heard until after 4pm, councillors were limited to one minute proposal & seconder speeches. Something as critical as a service for abused women in the city was given perfunctory treatment.
An earlier motion on Palestine got a great deal more attention. While this is clearly an important topic, it is not really one that ECC can do anything about. Unlike the funding of women’s services.
Let’s start with looking at the gruesome Greens.
Cllr Alex Stanisforth, the spiteful toad behind the threat to EWA, claimed that men not being allowed into women’s shelters it would be “the first step towards the dominance of c*s het white men over all others”. This is Cllr Staniforth.
Scott is "disappointed" & thinks we aren't "moderate" or "kind" (because that's what good girls are supposed to be). Actually, we're very moderate & most women in Scotland do agree with us.
Scott would "argue" we're "actively anti-women". Challenge accepted. When's the debate?
I wonder if he checks his Twitter these days. Anyway, @DouneScott, if you can make this argument we are all ears! He clearly isn't THAT fussed about sexism or respect for women or he wouldn't be hanging out with Dom...
Perhaps @ScotGovFM missed her letter. If so, he needs to ensure his staff find it as a matter of urgency. It's excellent, but if he's struggling we'll sum up some of it below.
Patrick Harvie talks of a "toxic rhetoric...which is particularly misogynistic, homophobic and transphobic and also...racist and anti-migrant rhetoric. That transcends any one political party."
Today, there was a debate in @ScotParl about safe schools. This was something we addressed in a meeting at Parl in Dec last year with harrowing testimony from a teacher.
.@PamGosalMSP said violence in schools was an epidemic. She, rightly, focuses on the impact on young girls and talks about the testimony from the teacher at that meeting, incl the use of hidden cameras in unisex toilets. It's vital to have single sex facilities!
.@RozMccall raised the issue of age inappropriate messages about gender identity provided in primary schools by LGBTYS (who do not have a remit for primary schools).
