A new variant, NB.1.8.1, tops collection 42 with 90% weekly advantage. It quickly grows from 0 to nearly 100% in Hong Kong in the past two months.
NB.1.8.1 is evolved from NB.1. It mimics the spike of XEC on a different backbone(XDV) and adds some more. cov-spectrum.org/collections/42
Currently, the fastest XEC branch is XEC.25.1, which has spike S:T22N,F59S from KS.1.1, S:F456L,Q493E from KP.3.3, and S:A435S grabbed after recomb.
NB.1.8.1 follows a different trajectory. It starts from XDV, then gains S:F456L to form XDV.1 \1
Then it gets S:G184S+K478I to form XDV.1.5. After that, it grabs S:T22N+F59S to form NB.1, and gets S:Q493E+A435S for NB.1.8.1. Eventually, it gets all XEC.25.1 pieces(T22N,F59S,A435S,F456L, Q493E) while adding its own G184S and K478I. All independently on an XDV backbone \2
