A recent case series suggests that the ketogenic diet may significantly reduce symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and even bring some individuals into remission. Here’s what happened. 🧵👇
OCD is a complex psychiatric condition. Current treatment options are effective for some, but for many, medications only help partially, or not at all.
But in this report, 3 individuals experienced dramatic improvements after adopting a #ketogenicdiet, putting their symptoms into remission and eliminating the need for medications.
Researchers used the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS), a gold-standard clinical tool. The participants' average scores dropped by 21 points, corresponding to a 90.5% reduction in symptoms.
And it wasn’t a fluke.
Each time a participant deviated from the ketogenic diet, their OCD symptoms returned, only to improve again once the diet was reinstated. This pattern was consistent across all three cases.
How is keto helping?
Emerging research suggests that OCD, like many psychiatric disorders, is linked to metabolic dysfunction in the brain:
🧠 Glucose hypometabolism
🧠 Neurotransmitter imbalances
🧠 Oxidative stress
🧠 Inflammation
Research has shown that ketogenic diets address all four.
We’re only beginning to understand how powerful metabolic interventions can be in #psychiatry. But the early signals are promising.
These findings echo growing evidence that metabolic psychiatry could transform care for those with many different forms of mental illnesses.
Of course, this was a small case series, not a randomized trial. We need more research. But for individuals with treatment-resistant OCD, a well-supported ketogenic approach may offer hope where few options exist.
If you or someone you love is struggling with #OCD and considering metabolic interventions, consult a clinician experienced in therapeutic ketogenic diets. Safety and support matter.
Science is catching up — but people shouldn’t have to wait forever.
🧠Your brain runs on energy, and tiny power plants inside your cells, called mitochondria, make it happen. But not all parts of the brain have the same energy needs.
🔍A new study mapped mitochondrial activity across the brain to see what that means for health & disease.
🔋Mitochondria take fuel from food and oxygen and turn it into ATP, the body's energy currency.
⚡️This is especially important for the brain, which needs constant energy to function properly, or neurological and psychiatric disorders can ensue.
⚖️ But there's a problem: Scientists can study mitochondria up close OR look at brain activity through MRI scans. There's a gap between these two levels of research, making it hard to actually connect energy use with brain function.
1/ Wow. It just keeps getting worse. Since we made this video about the "keto causes heart attacks" news story, more info has surfaced about the study
2/ As described on the ACC website, participants filled out a food questionnaire once and then were followed for 11 years but never updated their nutrition information! acc.org/About-ACC/Pres…
3/ Have you changed anything about how you eat in the past 11 years? Yeah, us too. But this study has no way of capturing that.

3/ “Matt was treated by 41 mental health professionals & prescribed 29 meds but he was still not well. He was doing everything he needed to do. He got better but he didn’t get well. His condition was labeled treatment resistant.” @janellison#metabolicmind#MetabolicPsychiatry
1/4 Metabolic Psychiatry has the potential to transform treatments not only for depression and anxiety, but also serious mental illnesses like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. #KetoforMentalHealth#MetabolicMind#MetabolicPsychiatry
2/4 Understanding the connection between metabolic & mental health could transform how we diagonse and treat mental illness. We can do better that just using drug therapies. Targeted medications with nutritional ketosis could prove to be a gamechanger for psychiatric treatments.
3/4 Along with others in the field like @chrispalmermd@shebanimd@georgiaedemd and many others, we hope to spread the message of effective metabolic therapies for mental health.
