Today something unexpected happened.
It started with a simple message. From someone whose name felt oddly familiar.

What followed was a wave of emotions I didn’t even know were still buried inside me. A memory I’d almost given up on.

I need to tell this story. 🧵
2/
Before I can even process what just happened, I need to go back—way back—to where it all started.
Some of this is fuzzy, like pages from an old book. But the feeling? It’s always been with me. Like something I lost but never forgotten.
3/
When I was a kid, summers felt endless.
I remember the smell of fresh air, the stillness of the fields, the warmth of the sun on my face, cows mooing in the far. It was in a small Polish town called Morąg. That’s where my story begins.

That’s where I met her.
4/
We lived in Germany, but my parents had a holiday house in Morąg, in the Warmia-Masuria region of Poland.
It was like a small farm—big lawn, empty barn, a few chickens, but for a kid... it was a dream! I was maybe around 7 at the time.
5/
I remember the two dogs we owned —Reksio and Oskar.
Reksio was young, playful my Uncle had given me as a gift. Oskar was older and… grumpy. He used to scare me. Bit me a couple of times, too.

But even he grew protective over time. Funny how bonds grow without you noticing.
6/
Still, I was lonely. I told my mom.
She said: go outside, meet other kids.

And one day, I did. I met a boy named Mateusz. Same age. We clicked instantly. Ran through the streets, explored nearby ponds, and made up adventures only kids could understand.

We were best friends.
7/
But then I met his sister - Marta.

She was a year older than us, and in my seven-year-old heart, she was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen.

Looking back, I think that was the first time I ever felt what people call love.
8/
The three of us spent the summer together—laughing, running, creating memories that I thought would last forever.

At some point, Marta gave me a photo of herself. And I believe to have madea promise.

About always coming back. About never forgetting . About always loving her.
9/
But life doesn’t wait for childhood promises.

My parents divorced. The holiday house was sold. And just like that, Morąg was no longer a place I could return to.
10/
One summer, we were inseparable. By the next, they were just a memory.

No goodbyes. No way to stay in touch. They were gone.
11/
For years, every time I was near Morąg, I thought of them.

I never forgot Marta’s name and I could still picture their apartment building. But I had no way to find them.

I forgot their last name and where the house exactly was.
12/

Then today—25 years later—I got a message.

It was from Mateusz.

"Hi Adrian, I have a question for you. I’m not sure if it’s really you, but I remember meeting a boy with your name when I was a kid. Maybe it’s you?" Image
13/
I froze.

Twenty-five years had passed. And yet, somehow, Mateusz still remembered me.

In an instant, a part of my childhood that I thought was lost forever came rushing back.
14/
I don’t know what happens next.

But what I do know is that sometimes, the past isn’t as far away as we think. Sometimes, fate has a way of bringing back the people we thought we’d never see again.
15/
Have you ever lost someone, only for fate to bring them back into your life?

Because right now, I’m still trying to process mine.
