Brussels is watching amazed, as Trump destroys the US economy. "Nobody in the Commission thought that the US government would be this stupid and self-destructive," an EU official tells me. "That they would blow up their own country by letting ChatGPT make their trade policy." 🧵
EU officials are quietly preparing brutal countermeasures — but they’re in no rush.
Markets are doing the work for them. Here’s what’s happening behind the scenes: 📜📌
Trump’s chaos is collapsing the US markets faster than any EU retaliation could.
Inside the Commission and among EU governments, the mood is: Don't give Trump an excuse to blame this on others.
Since February, the S&P 500 has dropped 20%.
European officials believe Trump's trade chaos is backfiring — and see no reason to escalate while the damage grows organically.
Inside the Commission and among EU trade ministers, the mood is calm — almost mocking.
“We’ll just let them stew,” another senior official says.
“If Trump doesn’t blink by the end of the month, we’re ready to hit hard.” But for now? They'll watch him sweat.
German Economy Minister Robert Habeck summed up the mood: “We're under no time pressure. The Americans are under pressure and are now in a position of weakness,” he said. “The damage can get even worse — that’s why we must act calmly, carefully, but decisively.”
Habeck also mocked Elon Musk’s call for a US-EU "zero-tariff" deal:
“It's sign of weakness and fear. If he has something to say, he should go to his President... Before we talk about zero tariffs, stop the nonsense and mess you just made in the last week.”

DE-US ANNOUNCEMENT ON WEAPONS LOOMING: Ahead of a crucial meeting of NATO allies, Germany and the U.S. are preparing to make a new announcement on weapons deliveries to Ukraine. Could this be a decision to send Leopard tanks?
Officials we spoke to certainly believe so...

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis says he expects the sign-off for sending tanks to Ukraine will come at the Ramstein Air Base meeting in Germany on Friday: “I would not be surprised that out of this meeting, there would come a decision to send German tanks.” 2/n
Some German parliamentarians following the debate say a decision is imminent — “the Leos are coming,” one told Playbook.
But in Berlin, for now, the official answer to our questions is that there is no answer. 3/n
SCOOP: In an unexpected turn of events, the UK today told its EU partners that PM Liz Truss is not only willing to attend the first meeting of the European Political Community in Prague next week, but that she is also offering to host the next summit in London.
More soon. 1/n
The European Political Community is a nascent configuration of European leaders including the EU, aspiring members, but also neighbors that don't want to join the Union such as Norway and the U.K. They will meet for the first time on October 6.
The U.K. made the announcement that it is willing to host the next meeting, which has not been reported before, at a closed-doors meeting of sherpas on Thursday, two officials who were present at the meeting told POLITICO.

🤓Interesting figures in Commission report on trade deal utilization today...
NERD ALARM
The report shows only 37 percent of EU exports to Canada actually used the EU-Canada deal CETA to pay lower tariffs.
The big majority of EU exporters preferred paying higher tariffs than using the trade deal, even though they were eligible. ec.europa.eu/transparency/r…
Business groups I spoke to think this is because "Canada-style" trade deals come with a lot of paperwork. As an exporter, you need to prove that your product complies with rules of origin.
Often, companies prefer to just pay the tariff rather than doing that paperwork.
🚨 The EU-US Trade fight is about to get nastier. The WTO has allowed the US to hit the EU with billions in punitive tariffs over Airbus subsidies.
Four EU officials told POLTICO that the WTO on Friday ruled in Trump’s favor.
