Here's a story (I won't name the person who told me this) that illustrates where we are in modern Britain. Someone who was a Labour Party agent in a town in Britain with a sizeable Muslim population was asked to meet a 'community leader' to discuss the next election. He went...
...and sat down at a table. The person threatened to withhold the votes of the hundreds of postal votes he controlled because the Labour candidate had not satisfied him on a particular issue. To illustrate that this was not an idle threat, he brought in shoeboxes full of....
...postal votes from the last election, all filled in for Labour but unposted. 'This will happen again unless you do as I say' was what he pretty much explicitly said. This agent (a decent person who is no longer in Labour) just left & refused to have anything to do with it.
I'm afraid that not all Lab agents etc who find themselves in a similar position react similarly. Sometimes the threat isn't made as blatantly, it's more implicit. But we have imported the corrupt sectarian politics of clientelism into this country & then let it fester. It stinks
I also spent years canvassing for Labour. One road in my ward had a lot of Muslim voters. Hundreds of times this is what happened. A woman in a veil opened the door. She spoke no more than a few words of English. When I managed to get across to her that it was an election, she...
...would say 'Ask my husband' or 'My husband is not in'. Once I got a woman who spoke reasonable English. She was quite explicit and said 'My husband tells me how to vote, I obey him as a good Muslim'. The idea she would be allowed a political opinion of her own was outlandish
This wasn't just one or two. This was the default. Occasionally you might get a younger Muslim woman who appeared to defy this. But 98% of the time this was the reality. I am sorry, it's not on. We shouldn't accept this as ok. This is Britain, not rural Pakistan
So you can see why, when I see Labour politicians blithering on about Islamophobia and how we need to restrict free speech to 'tackle' it, I see red. They are ignoring reality and putting on an act to curry favour with corrupt Islamic vote-harvesters. It is rotten
If thinking that all of this is not ok, if thinking that Muslims should either adapt to our basic social and political norms (e.g. not being corrupt, not being misogynists) or not be here, makes me an 'Islamophobe' or whatever, so be it. I don't care. The hour is late. Wake up
Also, the silence of most 'feminists' on these issues is shameful. There are lots of women right under your noses who are oppressed. But because they wear hijabs & you're too cowardly to criticise Islam, you ignore it & blither on about 'tampon poverty' or whatever instead

Some of us have long said that welfare states are only sustainable with the social trust that tends to only exist within a stable & culturally homogeneous population. So don't be surprised at outrage if you cut disability & winter fuel benefits while mass immigration continues
Mass immigration combined with a social democratic welfare state will and cannot work. Highly diverse societies are low trust societies and low trust societies can't sustain a social contract of the sort that underpins the welfare state. Trying to defy this = political suicide
If you want to know why centre left parties practically everywhere are screwed, here's the recipe: 1. Mass immigration undermining social trust, 2. Accepting neoliberal globalisation which hollows out vast swathes of western economies esp in formerly left leaning provinces...

The calls to cancel Trump's state visit are amusing. A client state with a military dependent on US co-operation doesn't have the luxury of doing the right thing. When the puppet king tries to stand up to Caesar to curry favour with his home tribes, it doesn't usually end well
I'm all for an Anglo-Gaullist drive for national independence. I've been saying so for years. We need food security, a robust industrial policy, cheap energy. But the political establishment now sabre-rattling, both Lab & Tory, has spent years making us vassals. Reaping & sowing
'Let's destroy our industrial base, run down our military, humiliate our farmers, sell off half the country to either the US or the Chinese, then LARP as a great European power that can defy the Americans'. LOL

Wishful thinking, I'm afraid. Since the US used Britain's weakness at the end of WWII to crush us as a great power, we've been puppet vassals, expected to periodically travel to Rome to pay fealty to Caesar. Some US presidents are more tactful at hiding the fact but that's it
I don't know what it will take to get into people's heads the reality that the US does not and has never seen us as some valued ally of equal standing. We went from being pantomime villain European imperialists to being their client state with a brief period in the middle
The period in the middle was WWII and just after, when the Americans used the situation to structurally undermine and displace our global political and financial power, & then the 50s & 60s when full vassal status was gradually consolidated and periodically made very clear

The left, such as it is - from the Labour Party through media luvvies through university lecturers etc - don't get how much a large majority of the working classes absolutely fucking loathe and despise them. Viscerally. They hate the way you patronise and talk over them...
They hate the stupid nonsense jargon you spout, full of bullshit about 'sustainable communities', 'strategic frameworks' and 'mission statements'. They hate the fact that you're all careerist hacks from London who have never done a meaningful day's work in your lives.
They hate the fact that you never listen and are openly contemptuous towards anyone who dares raise any issues they find distasteful or 'problematic'. They hate the fact that you're barely concealed snobs who hold their everyday lives and habits in more or less open contempt

Among the biggest political issues today is this: the economic, social & cultural hollowing out of hundreds of towns and small cities in Britain. Many places that used to have their own significant civic and economic existence are now either just commuter towns or on life support
I will take the example I know best: my hometown, Chelmsford. Chelmsford remains relatively prosperous, but only as a dormitory of London. Over the past 40 years or so, it has lost most of the employers that gave it its own economic existence and pride. Little of that is left now
The two big employers were Britvic, the soft drinks manufacturer, and Marconi, the radio and then telecommunications firm. Several of my family members worked for them, as did thousands of people in Chelmsford. Marconi shut up shop in 2008, the Britvic factory closed in 2014

What increasingly strikes me is the lifelessness of contemporary liberalism, its total lack of vim or ultimate purpose. Ensuring that the right procedures are in place so we can all fairly participate in...nothing worth bothering with anyway. Equal opportunities nihilism
Any human institution or practice is meant to orientate us to some ultimate end worth having. Communion with God and holiness. Honour. Beauty. Love. The act of creating something worthwhile in itself in a faint imitation of God. Grace and glory. The beatific vision.
Liberalism ends up in a sort of infinite regression of nothingness. Inclusivity! Diversity! Fairness! Equality! What are we fairly and equally including you all in? The chance to enforce these very same empty procedures. To what end? Reproducing the same dynamic forever!
