In 2007, Australia joined a naval drill with India, the US and Japan called Malabar.
China protested.
Within a year, Australia walked away entirely.
By 2020, it was back permanently.
What changed in between is one of the Indo-Pacific's key stories.
1/58
Before we get to the Modi era, we need the backstory.
India and Australia are old partners in an unlikely way, thousands of Indian troops fought alongside Australians at Gallipoli in 1915, in a war neither country chose.
Formal defence ties began slowly.
A Memorandum on Defence Cooperation was signed in 2006, and a Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation followed in 2009.
These were modest, procedural steps, not a strategic partnership.
PM Modi's visit to Seychelles this week was not just to attend a National Day or receive an award.
Zoom out, look at every Indian Ocean visit over the past year, and a much larger strategic picture begins to emerge
A detailed thread
1-12
Why does the Indian Ocean matter so much?
- China has expanded its naval presence from Djibouti to Gwadar.
- The Strait of Hormuz carries around one-quarter of global seaborne oil trade, and any disruption has direct consequences for India.
- Nearly 90% of India's oil imports cross these waters. Securing these sea lanes is existential.
India's response has not been a series of isolated visits. It has been a deliberate, long-term maritime strategy building a ring of trusted partners from the Arabian Sea to the western Indian Ocean, island by island, port by port.
Why Every Great Power Wants Control of the Indian Ocean (Thread)
World's most imp geopolitical contest isn't in Europe or South China Sea. It's happening in a body of water most people ignore-
The Indian Ocean
Here's why it matters more than anywhere else on Earth.
1/20
80% of global seaborne oil.
50% of all container traffic.
100,000 ships per year.
This isn't a regional sea.
Indian Ocean is the circulatory system of the entire global economy.
(2/20)
Surprising fact:
- Three of the world's 20 largest shipping fleets belong to Indian Ocean nations.
- Indian Ocean economies are projected to contribute 20% of global GDP.
- This ocean is still being underestimated.
Trump Closed One Door, Modi Opened 27 Others (Thread)
Aug 2025: Trump slaps 50% tariffs on India over Russian oil and $48-60bn of Indian exports suddenly became uncompetitive. Textiles, gems, leather, shrimp all hit.
Exports to US fell nearly 28% in months.
India's largest single export market turned into a wall overnight.
But India didn't panic
1-24
For decades India leaned heavily on the US market. One political decision in Washington exposed how risky that dependence was.
India needed a new growth engine, fast, and needed it from a market too large to ignore.
Enter Europe.
27 January 2026, New Delhi
India and the European Union concluded the EU-India FTA after nearly two decades of talks. Von der Leyen herself called it "the mother of all trade deals."
Two billion people
25% of global GDP
One agreement.
A conservative evangelical Christian missionary org and a Maoist insurgency should be ideological enemies.
But Indian agencies now find a US-based Christian missionary network routed tens of crores into Maoist-affected regions.
This is the story of The Timothy Initiative. 🧵
1/20
The Timothy Initiative (TTI) is headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina.
It is a global evangelical church-planting organization. Its stated mission: train disciples who train disciples. Plant churches that plant more churches.
A spiritual franchise model at massive scale.
Founder: David Nelms. His first visit to India was in 1992, alongside evangelist Dan Burrell.
Burrell later wrote that the trip was "life-changing" and that for over 30 years, he and David were in the business of religious conversion.
Most Indians know about ISRO, Green Revolution, nuclear tests.
But almost nobody is talking about India's biggest bet for the 21st century.
It's happening 3,000 metres below the Indian Ocean.
It's called SAMUDRA MANTHAN.
1/25
What is Project Samudra Manthan?
India's National Deep Water Exploration Mission launched to map & extract energy, minerals & resources hidden in India's deep ocean floor.
"Samudra Manthan" = churning of the ocean
Gods churned the ocean to find hidden treasures. India is doing exactly that
It consists of 3 related but different programmes:
Deep Ocean Mission- the umbrella science mission (₹4,077 cr)
Samudrayaan- India's crewed submersible (like an ocean ISRO)
Samudra Manthan- the deep-water EXPLORATION & EXTRACTION mission
