Market Shares of Purchase Volume on US General Purpose Cards
Commercial and consumer credit, debit and prepaid cards issued in the US carrying the global network brands—Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover Financial Services—generated $10.773 trillion in purchase volume (spending for goods and services) in 2024. This was an increase of 5.9% over 2023. Credit card cash advances and debit card cash withdrawals are not included in purchase volume.
Visa debit and prepaid card purchase volume grew 6.0% to $3.379 trillion. Visa credit card purchase volume grew 5.8% to $3.204 trillion. Purchase volume on Mastercard credit cards was up 6.5% to $1.526 trillion. Debit and prepaid Mastercard card purchase volume increased 8.5% to $1.258 trillion. Purchase volume on American Express cards grew 3.9% to $1.194 trillion This included a small amount of debit and prepaid card spending. Credit card purchase volume for Discover declined 2.6% to $0.212 trillion.
