What does Dom mean? Letโs discuss because there has been a bit of talk about his role again. #LFC

Szoboszlai is increasingly functioning as a facilitator for Mohamed Salah within Liverpoolโs right-sided structure. The entire right flank appears to be optimised for Salahโs strengths. Trent plays in a deeper, more โconventionalโ role during the first phase of attack. #LFC
This deeper positioning gives Liverpool two key advantages: 1. Earlier access to Salah โ Trent can hit those early diagonals or driven passes into Salah before the opponent's block sets, especially when Salah is isolated against the full-back. [video highlighting early access]
2. Positional โfreedomโ for Salah. But this is where the Szoboszlai comes in โ he is the glue between the two on the right but what are his ON the ball responsibilities? #LFC
1. To occupy the LCB in facilitating Salah to create isolation out wide. From those positions the possibilities are endless โ access to the inside channel, open space for 3rd man runs, just to name a fewโฆ
#LFC
2. Attack space/channel runs between LCB and LB. Salah has released the ball at the perfect time on so many occasions. His increased creativity requires movement so if youโre the RCM you need to provide the run whether itโs in transition or a settled attack. Itโs what I call the โKDB runโ because over the years nobody better has made that run and whipped in a ball waiting to be tapped in. KDB in the 10 next season? Sorry just a thought. Where were we??โฆ
[pic from Newcastle away highlighting Szoboโs run] It was the perfect game to enjoy our right sided triangle from the clouds that night. #LFC
3. Width fixer โ Slotโs number 10 must be able to adapt and occupy the touchline when Salah comes inside on occasions. This flexible movement pattern allows Salah to remain unpredictable โ receiving wide, running in behind, or drifting centrally โ because Szoboszlai, in particular, is managing the tactical responsibilities around him. This is not me making anything up โ on most occasions if Slot needs to send out some instructions for the attack, itโs via Szobo. For the backline itโs through his captain, for the lads up front, itโs Szobo which suggests trust and responsibility.

**Off the ball role**
1. He presses as the second striker [SS] and recovers the right side for the โcheatingโ Salah. Salah does his fair share of tracking, especially on the big day but itโs also a clear tactic from Liverpool to make sure their main man receives in positions to kill the opposition โ because why wouldnโt you create an environment for the best player in the league?
The 4-2-4 pressing structure has many benefits but itโs also not bulletproof, (Iโve been banging on about it since pre-season) but one of the main burdens it puts on Szobo, is whether he jumps on the press or not, itโs mainly him covering the right side โ if itโs not him then itโs Gravenberch who generally is reluctant to vacate central space. Letโs give you an example, I had to look hard because I like to stick to my own footage incase I get an email from Elon about breaching copyright rules. Here it isโฆ.
Video highlights the RCB is pressed by Salah. Szobo who sits on the opposing DM initially is then expected to shift to the right as the press is bypassed over Salah. This takes lungs. #LFC
2. Szobo is integral in trying to balance high pressing with defensive stability. And this is why he has dual responsibilities. If the first line of press is bypassed, he acts as the third midfielders to provide central coverage, fill half spaces, and cover the RB. Heโs even done it from the left on occasions this season.
Remember Wolves at home? Just go watch the last 20-30 mins of that game. Szobo was moved from pillar to post as Slot tried to nullify their central progression. This was him on the left late in the game. #LFC
3. Szobo is a transition and counter-pressing monster. The amount of times he stops or slows down opposing attacks from developing is nuts. The amount of times when a left winger or the LB has the ball to run into, has a glimpse of Szobo chasing them down and turns back to recycle play is nuts!

If you donโt want to take my word for it? Have a look at this graphic.

Now does all this mean Szobo cannot do more in terms of output? Of course not. Iโve written bigger threads than this explaining Liverpool need extra intelligence in the pockets especially when the 10 is expected to stay high up. The Slot 4-1-5/4-3-3 expects the 10 to occupy really advanced positions and if anyone needs to drop deeper to exert more control in buildup then itโs Macca from LCM but I donโt want to go into all that again because this thread was to explain what Szobo meant when he said, โI have to cover a lot for my right sideโ.
If youโre still here, thanks again.

I mentioned on Saturday the changes Slot kept on making to keep Fulham on the back foot โ they were going to create some scary moments for Liverpool but letโs take a look at what Slot actually did.
#LFC
Robbo gets sent offโฆ Slot gets Cody over. The thinking is to set up in a 4-4-1 off the ball with Gakpo at LB. It keeps Trent high and in possession Gakpo is effectively acting as the winger. Diaz at LW with Salah down the middle.
The role of Dominic Szoboszlai ๐๐ญ๐บ [THREAD]
Dom was called over by Slot on a few occasions against Wolves. It seemed like he was struggling to pick up spaces behind Wolvesโ initial press. Not all his fault as Wolves went man-to-man and with Liverpoolโs three for a large part of the game and the Liverpool back 4 were struggling to play through the press. Around the 25th minute mark Slot instructed Trent to start occupying right half-spaces/RCM to get the extra man in midfield. Slot would suggest this worked as Liverpool gained control after a bright start from the home team.
#LFC
But this means Szobo needs to occupy higher positions, in more central 10 positions as we havenโt seen him run the right channel much in the last few games. Does Slot want the RB making that run more when Salah comes deep on the touchline? This is a shot taken in the second half, Iโve only used this particular one as it highlights the set up much better โ there was plenty of this after Slot instructed Trent to invert more.
#LFC
In the Utd game, Szobo occupied many left half spaces behind Casemiro. This suits his profile as it allows him carry the ball vertically or diagonally, driving at defences with momentum, and carrying a bigger goal threat from cutting inside from those positions but on that day Mac Allister was the controlling 6 and Gravenberch was the driving force from the foundation of a two in midfield but how many times are we going to see that again? โ The fluidity of our trio suggests we will but it was also a specific tactic for Man Utd too. #LFC
So itโs a new era at Liverpool, Arne Slot inherits a good team but with some flaws, these are just some of the things I think we need to see next year if we want to compete with the other two.
#LFC
Iโve been banging on about our structure and rest defence for months on end but Klopp and co added some well needed positional principles but unfortunately went away from them near the end. Letโs look at the good bits firstโฆ #LFC
A second phase 3-2-5 and 2-2-6, Gomez inverted, good spacing and 3 players between the lines. Gomez at LB inverting was our best time in terms of control and structure, not only is it an extra midfielder but a duel winner & an extra defender on the pitch. #LFC
After the team was announced on Monday, there was a lot of reaction towards Diaz starting over Gakpo after the Dutchmanโs performance at Burnley. Holding width and off the ball work-rate are the main reasons Dรญaz gets the nod but
#LFC
after witnessing Klopp โlose itโ with Gakpo on numerous occasions during the 25 mins he played, it reiterated the fact that Gakpo needs to improve his overall approach to defending and tactical awareness if he wants to become a mainstay in this team. Cover shadowing, setting pressing traps and general intensity to go up and down sees Diaz ahead and thatโs why Klopp picks him. #LFC
An animated Klopp makes his way out of the technical area and lets Gakpo know what he thought about him not shifting across quick enough to stop the Newcastle attack down their right channel. #LFC
If Iโm honest I must admit I did question if the switch had come too early. When Jรผrgen went 4 up top with Trent and Gravenberch sitting in midfield, we were still creating chances but the game had a basketball feel to it โ and on a day when we were getting caught out with too much eagerness, you couldnโt help to think letโs gain control for five and our quality will shine through (probably via another screamer!)
#LFC
There is the 2-2-6 structure with Tsimikas interchanging with Diaz on this occasion. Salah wide, with Gakpo just off Nรบรฑez. It wasnโt Darwinโs day in front of goal and maybe Robinson at LB needed something different to deal but we had to get Salah between the sticksโฆ
#LFC
Here Klopp tells Salah to switch centrally and gets Darwin on the outside. If Darwin was tucked in too then youโd have Gakpo in the right half space as the receiver of a Trent pass on most occasions โ and this would allow Gomez really high on the touchline to provide width.
