Today we’re sharing a difficult update.
After deep reflection and many conversations, Gitcoin will be winding down the Grants Stack technology and the Grants Labs business unit by the end of May 2025.
This was not an easy decision — but one we believe is necessary. Here's why 👇
Grants Lab was created to scale our impact — building infrastructure to help anyone in web3 launch a grants program. Along the way, we supported leading ecosystems like Optimism, Polygon, Sei and Celo to scale their own grants programs.
But scaling innovation also means facing hard tradeoffs.
Despite strong traction and ecosystem validation, Grants Labs’ operating costs significantly outpaced its revenue.
With Gitcoin’s treasury in mind, and the market still in a tough spot, continuing this path would put our core mission at risk: Funding What Matters.
So we’re refocusing on what has always been Gitcoin’s heartbeat:
💚 The Gitcoin Grants Program.
We’re doubling down on GG24, improving core mechanisms, and leaning into community-led coordination. Gitcoin is not stepping back — we’re returning to our roots.
To our partners and users: the tech you rely on isn’t disappearing overnight. We’re working to ensure a smooth transition, including evaluating tech handoffs and continuing support where we can.
To our contributors: thank you. You made Gitcoin what it is.
🍃Celebrating What We Built
In the last 12 months, we’ve transformed Gitcoin’s brand into a recognized leader in grants innovation.
We deployed nine distinct funding mechanisms, expanded our technical capabilities beyond Quadratic Funding, and built trust with some of the biggest ecosystems in web3. We’re proud of our achievements.
Gitcoin has always been community-first.
This next phase will rely on you more than ever — to participate, govern, build, and shape the future of decentralized public goods funding.
We’re calling it: Gitcoin, Community Edition.
As we sunset Grants Lab, we’re also looking ahead:
🔁 More innovation in GG rounds
📈 Revamped GTC utility & governance
🌱 Renewed Ethereum ecosystem focus
👥 A leaner, more focused Gitcoin
We’re not going anywhere. If anything, we’re digging deeper.
Thank you for being part of this mission — in good times and hard ones.
We’re here to fund what matters. And that work continues.
We're offering $1M in matching funds to support open-source software projects. We're specifically looking to fund developer tools, web3 infrastructure, dApps & Apps, and projects from previous hackathons.
We're also featuring 7 distinct community-led funding rounds that demonstrate decentralized funding in practice. These rounds include Biofi Pathfinders focusing on environmental sustainability, ENS Ecosystem supporting Ethereum Name Service projects, and Ma Earth dedicated to regenerative land projects.
And now, the moment you’ve been waiting for… #GG22 is one week away!
We've got:
🟢 $1.2M+ total matching funds
🟢 4 OSS rounds with $1M matching
🟢 7 Community rounds with $125K+ matching
