"JD Vance is wrong," said the new pope, before he was Pope: "Jesus doesn't ask us to rank our love for others." So I went to try to find what Vance said, and it wasn't til I got to the Hindustan Times that I could find what Vance actually said.
Here is what Vance said: "There is a Christian concept that you love your family and then you love your neighbor, and then you love your community, and then you love your fellow citizens, and then after that, prioritize the rest of the world. A lot of the far left has completely inverted that."
Vance wasn't talking about "ranking our love": He was talking about the order of our obligations. You have no business going out and trying to save the world if you are neglecting your own family.
This is one of the main reasons, by the way, that priests are required to be unmarried: because the primary obligations to your family compete with their ministerial obligations, which are also primary.
