The leaders of Britain, France, Germany and Poland, together with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, made a joint phone call to Donald Trump prior to making the announcement.
Zelenskyy told Trump that Ukraine is ready for direct negotiations with Russia.
Around 20 member countries of the "coalition of the willing" supporting Ukraine had held a videoconference with Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Zelenskyy
βWe have agreed that from Monday 12th of May, a full and unconditional ceasefire must start for at least 30 days. We demand it together from Russia and we know that the US supports us in this.β β President Zelenskyy said
βTogether with Trump, we will increase military aid to Ukraine if putin refuses to cease fire,β
βAll of us here, together with the US, are calling Putin out. If heβs serious about peace, then he has a chance to show it now,β β π¬π§ PM Keir Starmer
βIf this proposal is rejected [...] and there is only a false game, we are ready to have strengthen sanctions. And to further unite the West around Ukraine in its fight for independence,β β Polish PM Donald Tusk
Donald Tusk says the current sanctions are working, adding that "if it weren't for sanctions, the situation would be comparably worse".
"Russia is actively waiting for sanctions to be lifted," he says
"We urge Russia for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire from Monday. With President Trump, weβll fully support Ukraine, including tougher sanctions," stated Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Emmanuel Macron announced new meetings of the "Coalition of the Willing" in the coming weeks.
βIn addition to the ceasefire, in order to prepare for a lasting peace, we are ready to think over the long term how to prepare financing for Ukraine. And to provide sustainable guarantees and a model of the Ukrainian army that could withstand a possible attack in the future. We will also consider deploying forces with insurance to provide guarantees," he stressed.
According to Macron, as of now, the partners do not have a specific form of operation of the military contingent in Ukraine, since their mandate "will depend on the progress of discussions" on the ceasefire.
βA comprehensive (air, land, sea, infrastructure) cease fire for 30 days will start the process for ending the largest and longest war in Europe since World War II,"Β Keith Kellogg,Β Trump's special envoy for Ukraine
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked Donald Trump for not halting U.S. military aid, continuing intelligence sharing critical for defending Ukrainian skies, and maintaining sanctions against Russia.
βWeβre proposing the first steps to end the war. Weβre doing everything in unity, offering a key stepβan unconditional ceasefire. We count on our army and allies to be strong, but we also need diplomacy to work effectively," β Zelenskyy said after a press conference with "Coalition of the Determined" leaders.
In March, Putin rejected a U.S.-proposed ceasefire that Zelensky had supported.
