China 🇨🇳 Hit by New COVID Surge Driven by Omicron XDV and NB.1.8.1 Variants Hospitals Overwhelmed, Beijing Warns of Delayed Response

New COVID-19 infections are rising again across China, driven by Omicron subvariants NB.1.8.1 and XDV.

Viral videos show crowded hospitals and long lines, fueling public concern over a potential new wave.
On May 12, the Chaoyang District Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Beijing confirmed that epidemic activity in the capital is heating up.
While officials have not declared a new public health emergency, local reports and eyewitness accounts suggest a widespread wave of illness is sweeping through communities.
In Baoji, Shaanxi Province, a resident speaking under the pseudonym Xiao Qiang told China Times that many people around him have fallen ill.
A lot of people have caught colds recently. Most of my relatives and friends have fevers,” he said. “It seems that the symptoms are the same as previous epidemics. If you go to see a doctor, they’ll just say it’s a cold, and vice versa.”
He added that recovery is slow, with medications and injections proving largely ineffective. Many rural doctors, he noted, admit privately that the illness resembles past waves of COVID-19, but it's being labeled differently.

Researchers from China have discovered a new strain of porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV), CHN/SX-2023, capable of infecting human liver cells and disrupting genetic expression, raising concerns about animal viruses infecting humans.
Initially found in pigs in Hong Kong in 2012, PDCoV has since spread across multiple countries, primarily affecting pigs. However, the new study reveals the strain can infect human cells, specifically liver cells, and cause significant genetic disturbances.

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health is stepping up its preparedness against bird flu, and has secured an option for 11 million vaccines in the event of a pandemic. Image
On Wednesday, municipal doctors in Norway were updated on the risk assessment. The agreement with two suppliers ensures vaccines will be produced first if a pandemic-causing influenza virus emerges, providing two doses for every person in Norway.
It involves a total of 11 million doses, from two manufacturers, but we are not going to buy that many, says Preben Aavitsland, acting regional director for infection control at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health ( FHI ), to VG.
