The Nazi slogan "Arbeit Macht Frei," which translates to "Work Makes You Free," was an attempt to valorize forced labor. Slaveowners had invoked a similar strategy by using Christianity to justify slavery. In modern times, capitalists have indoctrinated this same mindset (via the
"Protestant Work Ethic") on all of society, convincing the masses that our primary purpose in this life is to labor for them. Structurally (by privatizing the means of production), they tie our survival to our service to them. Socially (via their institutions that are built to
justify this economic arrangement), they tell us that without this forced submission, we will become "purposeless, anxious, depressed, and worthless." Meanwhile, in an ironic twist of [material] reality, being reduced to servants of capital is a purely dehumanizing experience
that has made everyone depressed, aimless and anxious, and has gutted life of any meaning or purpose. Justine obviously benefits from this, as her wealth (like all wealth) was built from our labor and requires our continued servitude.
